The Professor

The Professor is book in McMurtrie and Drake Legal Thrillers series. The book is set n Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1969. Bailey delivers his debut novel, a legal suspense thriller spiced with a football icon, Paul Bryant, popularly known as Bryant an American football coach and a player- famously known as the longtime coach of the University of Alabama football. We are introduced to a Thomas Jackson McMurtrie, an aspiring trial attorney who had just been approached by a top firm. Now the coach, who happens to be his former mentor, wants him to be a law professor. Even before he had arrived in Birmingham, Tom clearly knew as he had known for decades all those years when he was playing football, the Man had called, and he was to answer at all cost.

Now as a law professor, Tom finds himself caught in the middle of some major issues. He is being forced to quit, as he is involved in a scandal, then betrayed by both a colleague and his diminishing health. At the same time someone from the past, a girl that he once dated approaches him with some legal problems. Several months before, her husband and daughter were involved in a car accident. They were involved in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer truck, and they all perished- her husband, her daughter & granddaughter even the trucker.

The trucking company was the Willistone Trucking Company, based in Tuscaloosa. According to the witness statement, it was revealed that her son-in-law turned in front of the rig, but she does not believe the witness account.

Ruth had never filed a lawsuit before, and she had nowhere else to seek help. For Tom, it had been over a year before he had tried any case and so he encourages her to take the case to someone else. However, somehow, he agrees to have a look at the case and later offers the case to Richard Drake. Rick had always wished for the day he would confront the professor-Tom. How could Tom have the guts of facing him after all the trouble he had subjected him to? Rick was fired from his job thanks to him. However, the Professor thinks that this case would compensate for getting Richard fired and ruined his reputation.

However, could Richard possibly turn down the multimillion-dollar case? Rick accepts the case and soon begins to discover the whole truth behind the tragedy that is deeply buried in an elaborate web of bribery, arson, and greed. On the eve the complex and challenging trial and his case coming up in the midst of a deadly cover-up that threatens to silence all the key witnesses. During this moment, Rick realizes that only the Professor can help.

With nothing to lose and with justice to gain, will Rick and Tom finally defeat the lethal adversary? Can they collaborate efficiently and put their past behind them? Most crucially, can the 68-year-old law professor who has not tried a single case for four-decade win the case and make a history in West Alabama?

The Professor is a fast-paced suspense of villainous corruptions combined with his young protégée and a seasonal legal professor making a fight for justice with some intriguing emotional dynamics.

Between Black and White

During the summer night in 1966 when Bocephus aka “Bo” was five years old when he witnessed the lynching of his father by the Klu Klux Klan. He overhead the gang leader speaks, and the voice was the one he had heard many times before. It was the voice of a famous businessman whom his parents worked for. When Bo informed his mother about the person responsible for his father’s death and that he wanted to report the case to the local sheriff, it scared his mom to death.

No one would agree to the words of a five-year-old traumatized boy against the man who was considered the pillar of the community. Furthermore, Bo’s life would be in grave danger if what he saw and heard was ever spoken to someone else and so he sent to stay with his uncle and aunt in a nearby town.

Bo excelled in football and was recruited to play for the University of Alabama. He had visions to play professional football until the day he was injured on the field, and this ended his career. Bo then chose to go to law school and that when he met Tom McMurtrie, a man who became more than just his professor. Bo finally graduated and went back to his original hometown, Pulaski, Tennessee. He was the only African American attorney in his hometown and rejected many offers from high-profile law firms, but despite this, he had made a good name for himself.

Bo was still seeking justice for his father; he knew exactly the man responsible for it and was determined to bring this man to justice in whatever case. One day he stops at a local tavern has too much to drink, and while he is sitting at the bar drinking, Andy Walker, the man responsible for the death of his father walks in accompanied by his wife and brother in law. The two exchange some heated words in front of several witnesses. Andy leaves the tavern then moments later Bo also leaves but he is so drunk such that he cannot remember what happened the previous night. The next morning is awakened when the police knock on his door, and he is arrested for the murder of Andy Walker. He is shocked, he knew that he had a blackout, but he would never kill anyone no matter how much he hated them. With now Bo accused of murder, Tom McMurtrie is the only man whom he trusts with his life and the only person who can save him from the jaws of injustice.

Great plots. I can’t put them down. I was at Bama when the Man was coaching. What an experience! I’ve lived in Alabama all my life, and I feel like I’ve known all these characters in your books. Keep writing!!

I am on my 4th book and have had great enjoyment and fun reading them.

When I first started to read the Professor I did not realize it had so much BAMA milieu. I was hooked.

I plan on reading all of each series and hope there will be many more to come.

My son also went to the University of Alabama in the 90s. I remember many of the streets in the book. Absolutely loved them all. NEED MORE😂

Loved the books. My daughter went to Bama but alas is married to an Auburn fan. Waiting for the next book

Our book club just read The Professor. I absolutely LOVED it! I’m an avid reader, but I rarely finish a book in just one or two days … until I picked up The Professor, that is. I can guarantee that it is not the last Robert Bailey book I’ll be reading. I was hooked from the first sentence. Well done, Sir!

Mr. Bailey, I attended Amelia High School with your father-in-law and he shared the knowledge of your books with his class during a reunion. His classmate shared the information with me and I was hooked when I read the Professor and have just today finished The Wrong Side. Your characters are friends. I hope there are more books. JDG

I have read three of your books. Just finished Between Black and White. Excellent

I love Robert Bailey books also. I have them all and hope to receive notice when new ones are ready for download. Can’t have too many Robert Bailey books. Great writer.

I am addicted to Mr. Bailey’s books and would love to have a sheet with a list of all his books! I live in Huntsville, too and am going to meet him today at A Book Clubwith a friend! Doris Wilson

Detailed book overview

Four rounds. Four heroes. Four life-changing lessons.

When Randy Clark wakes up on his 40th birthday, he's going to go to work, eat the steak dinner his wife prepared him, blow out the candles on his birthday cake. . . And then he's going to kill himself.

With his dreams of a professional golf career long gone, his marriage struggling after the death of his son, and facing financial ruin, Randy has no other option to help his family but to jump off a bridge, and to let the life insurance company do the rest.

But Randy's plans go awry when he receives a surreal gift: four rounds of golf with his four heroes, four chances to learn from the best.

Four chances to change his fate. . .

A small-town attorney takes on prejudice and corruption.

Small-town lawyer Bocephus Haynes comes home late one night to find District Attorney General Helen Lewis waiting for him. Her ex-husband has just been killed. She’s about to be arrested for his murder. And she wants Bo to represent her.

There’s a lot working against them. Just before his death, Helen’s ex-husband threatened to reveal a dark secret from her past. Bo has been in a tailspin since his wife’s death. What’s more, his whole life has been defined by a crime committed against his family, and he continues to face prejudice as the only African American litigator in Pulaski, Tennessee.

Bo’s back is against the wall, and Helen resigns herself to a dismal fate―but a stunning discovery throws everything into chaos. There’s a chance for justice, but to achieve it, the cost might be too much for Bo to bear.

A battle-worn lawyer fights for a young man’s life...

Teen pop star Brittany Crutcher is found dead in small-town Tennessee. For attorney Bocephus Haynes, it’s just another night in Pulaski. Bo swore off criminal work after his last case, but the beloved singer’s murder demands answers.

The prime suspect is local high school football hero and the victim’s boyfriend, Odell Champagne. However, this fallen athlete is one of Bo’s son’s best friends. Bo knows this young man and does not believe him capable of the crime.

When Odell is charged with murder, Bo reluctantly takes the case, sparking outrage throughout the town. But as Bo follows the evidence, he learns that the victim made decisions in her last hours that would give powerful forces motive to harm her. Feeling mounting pressure from the community and the DA, Bo forges ahead. But as the seconds count down, he wonders whether justice is even possible.

A lawyer who takes on his sister’s case ends up confronting small-town secrets and family skeletons.

Attorney Jason Rich has made a fortune off other people’s bad luck. His billboard slogan―“In an accident? Get Rich!”―accosts motorists on highways from Alabama to Florida. As ambulance chasers go, he’s exceptional.

But after a recent divorce and a stint in rehab, Jason has hit a rough patch. And things only get worse when his sister, Jana, is accused of her husband’s murder. Even though Jason has no experience trying criminal cases, Jana begs him to represent her.

Jason has mixed feelings about returning to Lake Guntersville, Alabama―and even more reservations about diving back into his sister’s life. Between the drugs, the affairs, and a tendency to gaslight everyone in her inner circle, Jana has plenty of enemies in town.

But did Jana hire someone to kill her husband? Jason isn’t so sure. He heads back to his hometown to unravel the truth and face off against opponents old and new.

A haunting legal thriller about the price of redemption for a billboard lawyer who takes a case he can’t win in a town he can’t forget.

Now that attorney Jason Rich has returned home to Guntersville, Alabama, the “In an accident? Get rich!” lawyer is anxious to leave his checkered past behind. Jason hopes this next chapter in his life will be a chance to confront his personal troubles while making amends with his family.

But when a former high school football star stands accused of killing a police officer, Jason is unwillingly thrust into the chaos. The local meth king blackmails Jason into defending the alleged murderer, and Jason knows he can’t refuse. With the lives of his family and closest friends on the line, he takes the obviously unwinnable case.

As Jason dives into the investigation, he vows to dismantle the meth empire gripping his hometown. But as he confronts alternative suspects and follows new leads, Jason realizes that everyone has secrets to hide and interests to protect—at any cost.

Law professor Thomas Jackson McMurtrie literally wrote the book on evidence in the state of Alabama. But when a power-hungry colleague uses a recent run-in between McMurtrie and headstrong student Rick Drake to end his career, he is left unsure what to do next.

Meanwhile, a devastating trucking accident in Henshaw, Alabama, leaves a young family dead. Drake, now a fledgling lawyer, takes the case against the freight carrier and soon begins to uncover the truth behind the tragedy that is buried in a tangled web of arson, bribery, and greed. On the eve of the trial and with his case unraveling in the midst of a dangerous cover-up that threatens to silence his star witnesses, Drake realizes that only his estranged mentor, Professor McMurtrie, can help him now.

With everything to lose and only justice to gain, will McMurtrie and Drake overcome bad blood to defeat a ruthless adversary? Can the Professor turn back the clock and recover all that he’s lost?

In 1966 in Pulaski, Tennessee, Bocephus Haynes watched in horror as his father was brutally murdered by ten local members of the Ku Klux Klan. As an African American lawyer practicing in the birthplace of the Klan years later, Bo has spent his life pursuing justice in his father’s name. But when Andy Walton, the man believed to have led the lynch mob forty-five years earlier, ends up murdered in the same spot as Bo’s father, Bo becomes the prime suspect.

Retired law professor Tom McMurtrie, Bo’s former teacher and friend, is a year removed from returning to the courtroom. Now McMurtrie and his headstrong partner, Rick Drake, must defend Bo on charges of capital murder while hunting for Andy Walton’s true killer. In a courtroom clash that will put their reputations and lives at stake, can McMurtrie and Drake release Bo from a lifetime of despair? Or will justice remain hidden somewhere between black and white?

Former law professor Tom McMurtrie has brought killers to justice, and taken on some of the most infamous cases in Alabama’s history. Now he’s tackling his greatest challenge.

McMurtrie’s old nemesis, Jack Willistone, is found dead on the banks of the Black Warrior River. Willistone had his share of enemies, but all evidence points to a forgotten, broken woman as the killer. At the urging of the suspect’s desperate fourteen-year-old daughter, McMurtrie agrees to take the case.

But as seasoned as McMurtrie is, even he isn’t prepared for how personal and dangerous this case is going to get. With the trial drawing near and his sharp young partner, Rick Drake, dealing with a family tragedy, he recruits his best friend, Bocephus Haynes, to help investigate.

As key witnesses disappear and old demons return, time becomes McMurtrie’s most fearsome opponent. Soon loyalties will be tested and the boundaries of law will be broken as McMurtrie fights to save his legacy―and his client’s life―before the truth is buried forever in the muddy waters of the Black Warrior.

His last challenge: live long enough to save the lives of those he loves.

Cold-blooded killer JimBone Wheeler blames Tom McMurtrie for putting him on death row. He once vowed that he’d bring “a reckoning” on Tom and everyone the southern lawyer holds dear. When Wheeler escapes from prison, he aims to fulfill his promise. Victim by victim, he’s getting closer to his ultimate target. But for Tom, who’s dying of cancer, the role of savior and protector is a struggle that is becoming more desperate by the hour.

As the body count mounts, Tom, his partner, Rick Drake, and his best friend, Bocephus Haynes, brace for a confrontation like nothing they have ever faced before. This battle will be waged not in a courthouse but on the streets and fields of north Alabama. With all those he loves at risk, Tom must save his family, his friends, and his legacy from a killer whose hunger for retribution knows no bounds.

Now, as time ticks down and fate and vengeance close in, who will survive Wheeler’s final reckoning?

Bailey grew up as a big fan of stories, usually reading the ones about the prolific Alabama football coach “Bear” Bryant. So naturally when he went to college at the University of Alabama, he managed to attend just about every home football game they had during his tenure while still competing on the school’s trial team. His books have been endorsed by Winston Groom , author of Forest Gump .

The Professor is the first book in the McCurtie and Drake series and it refers to Professor Thomas Jackson McCurtie. In the first book, he is the former mentor of young, headstrong lawyer Rick Drake. A blow-up between the two ends McCurtie’s career as a law professor and he’s left unsure of what to do next. When Drake, now a lawyer, has a tough case and realizes that there is only man who can help him: his former mentor, Professor McCurtie. Can these two make amends in the name of justice?

Bailey follows that book up with Between Black and White , the second book in the series. In this one, a racist murder from 1966 comes back to light when the man rumored to have led the mob is found dead in the same spot. The original victim’s son is the prime suspect and Drake will pull McCurtie back in to clear his name.

We first meet Thomas Jackson McMurtrie in The Professor , the first book in Robert Bailey’s McMurtrie and Drake legal thrillers books. Tom is a 60 something retired professor who not only used to teach law, he was also the one who wrote the manual on evidence in the state of Alabama. He is also the former mentor of Rick Drake.

Due to some issues at work and because he was diagnosed with bladder cancer, he stopped working. Problem is, not only he left things with his student, Rick Drake in bad standing but he also doesn’t know what to do with himself anymore.

So when a truck accident leaves a family dead, he is asked to represent Ruth Ann Wilcox, the mother of a young woman who died in that fateful collision earlier. Even though the former mentor, Tom, and Rick are no longer in good terms, he does ask Rick to help him win the case against Jack Willistone and his trucking company.

The Robert Bailey debut novel is a fast-paced courtroom drama that borders on being a thriller with powerful villains and a race against time.

We meet McMurtrie again in the second book in the series, Between Black and White . This time, the black and white colors point to the skin colors of the people involved. Back in 1966, the father of Bocephus Haynes was lynched and found dead.

In the meantime, he studied law under his former mentor McMurtrie, got his license to practice law, and is now practicing in his hometown, Pulaski, Tennessee, where the lynching happened so many years before.

When Andy Walton, the man who was supposedly the head of the Ku-Klux-Klan group that killed Bo’s father, is found himself dead in the very spot that the earlier murder occurred, it is no big surprise that Bo himself is accused of the murder with the motive being revenge.

Except Bo didn’t do it, so now he asks McMurtrie for help in defending himself and finding the actual killer.

In the third McMurtrie and Drake novel, The Last Trial , we meet Tom McMurtrie again in probably his most difficult case so far. His old nemesis, Jack Willistone, is dead, killed and left on the shores of the Black Warrior River shortly after he was released from prison.

A woman, Wilma Newton, is accused of murdering him, so her 14-year-old daughter asks Tom for help. He does agree, but this time Rick Drake is not present, so he reaches out to his old friend Bo Haynes for help in solving this damning case.

Since there are a ton of people who would have gladly killed Willistone, it is not easy to find the real killer. But one thing Tom knows for sure is that Wilma didn’t kill that old monster.

In the fourth Tom McMurtrie book, The Final Reckoning , Robert Bailey brings back the gang once again while this time raising the stakes like never before. JimBone Wheeler is an evil killer who was imprisoned and put on death row at least in part due to Tom McMurtrie’s help. And JimBone is pissed as hell. And he has escaped.

Generally, the legal thrillers can be read on their own, however, for each series, the books are recommended to be read in order, to better experience the grown of the main characters and follow the strong dynamics and connections between the various sequence of events.

Robert Bailey author

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Robert Bailey attended the Davidson College in North Carolina from where he received his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1996. He always loved reading and writing stories. In college he took a creative writing class, and this is where he started writing short stories.

After his BA degree, Robert Bailey went to law school at the University of Alabama, where he served on the law review while competing on the school’s trial team, which is an honor that is received only by those students who can write really well. While there, he attended pretty much every home footbal game he had access to. He graduated with a degree in JD (Juris Doctor) in 1999.

While in school, he once was daydreaming and the idea of the law Professor came to him at that time. He started thinking of a law professor who had to actually try a case.

Robert Bailey has been working as a civil defense trial lawyer in Huntsville with the law firm of Lanier Ford Shaver & Payne for the last 17 years. He is married to Dixie Bailey with whom he has three children, a girl, and two boys.

While he is still practicing law full time, he is now also an author of legal thrillers with several books published to date. His first book The Professo r was published in 2014, and it received three major awards, including the 2014 Beverly Hills Book Award for Legal Thriller of the Year, the 2014 National Indie Excellence Award finalist, legal thriller and the 2014 Great Southeast Book Festival, Honorable Mention for General Fiction.

It took Robert Bailey 8 years to finish his first novel and get it published, while he did three main full revisions to the book. One of the main characters, Rick Drake, draws a lot of parallels with the author’s years attending law school.

After writing his debut novel, Robert Baily searched for an agent, opting for the traditional publishing rather than the self-publishing route. He found an agent after a year, and then the search for a good publisher began. It was no easy, as the age of the law professor is advanced (close to 70), but in 2014 The Professor was finally published by Exhibit A Books, which is part of Angry Robot. One year later, in 2015, it was reprinted by Thomas & Mercer.

The Robert Bailey books draw strongly from the author’s background and expertise with the law, where he was handling trucking litigation and civil cases in front of juries.

While each legal thriller in the series can be read as a standalone, it is recommended to read the Robert Bailey books in order not only because the main characters grow, develop, and get really complex as the stories evolve, but some books (such as the first one and the third one) are directly connected through various related characters (like Jack Willistone or  Bocephus Haynes) that keep appearing in several books of the series.

As a legal thriller reader I have read all of Grisham’s books then discovered author James Grippando and read all of his and fell into a funk not being able to connect with other legal thriller authors so I decided to scroll thru the internet and can upon your name ….. I took out three of your books and finished two now beginning the third. It’s difficult for me to put them down! The story lines are awesome keeping me on edge, the FAMILY LINE OF characters are superb and so REAL , HOPING TO SEE A CONTINUANCE in future novels ! Once finished with your novels it will be hard to find another author like you. Please KEEP WRITING!!!!!

Read the first book with my book club LOVED IT! Robert writes about Alabama. I’m a transplanted west Virginia girl. But have lived more years in Bana it’s home! His style reminds me of Greg Ilies’s books. I just finished Legacy of Lies. WOW didn’t see that one coming. Great Reading

You have done again. Loved legacy of lies. Keep them coming A faithful reader .kay taylor

I’m so glad I only just came across Robert Bailey as an author in the UK as I would not have been able to wait for books to be released. I have literally binged on the McMurtrie four books so its the only reason I’m happy to be in lockdown!! I’ve already pre ordered the Bocephus Haines book for June but hoping lock down finishes or I’m going to have to go ‘cold turkey’ waiting for some more releases! What a phenomenal set of books.

Mr. Bailey:

I have enjoyed all of your books. I’m on my third re-reading. Fantastic!! Keep writing!!!! You are another John Grisham . When will your next book be published?

I got hooked on his first book, The Professor in audio format. I am now on his 3rd book. Absolutely love the books with interesting characters.

@Rebecca, the new book comes out April 2020, and it features Bocephus Haynes, whom we met in a previous book. Honestly, I can’t wait.

@Rick Meece I love them too. Just a few more months until the new Robert Bailey book is out in his new series!

I absolutely LOVE his books, the stories and his writing style! Best new author I’ve found in quite some time!

Great books. When is the next book coming out?

Great books, Great writer.!!

Providing my eyes hold out, I am about to open “The Last Trial”. Your books truly fit the category of ” can’t put them down until the last page” I have been struck by the fact that so many instances in “Between Black and White” are so relevant in todays world.. Sadly I might add! Your fictitious Thomas Jackson McMurtrie, is reminding me more and more of current legal genius Mr. Robert Mueller, that says a lot about Thomas Jackson McMurtrie.. Love the location of these novels, I have lived in southern areas and in that way I relate to the laid back, country atmosphere. It would have been best to read your books in order, however that has not interfered with my enjoyment.. I hope that you will continue to feature all of the current family of characters The Professor, Drake, Bo, etc in more of your work. Respectfully, Shirley Bailey..
