How to Engage New Website Visitors With Web Slideshows

Updated: June 15, 2022
Published: September 08, 2020
Eight seconds . That’s how much time you have to capture the average internet user’s attention on your website. You can tweak your content and page layout as much as possible, but there’s no way around it: Engaging website visitors, especially first-timers, is a real challenge for online businesses.

However, this challenge is very much solvable thanks to the numerous web design technologies at our disposal. Among all the methods for quickly grabbing attention and prompting action, you’ve probably seen the web slideshow technique. And there’s a good chance it could work on your site, too.
Now, when you hear the term slideshow , your mind might immediately jump to PowerPoint presentation , and from there, conference room and boring .
If so, try to forget about PowerPoint for a moment. As it turns out, web slideshows are among the most popular and effective methods for conveying visual content to visitors.
In this guide, we’ll learn about common uses of web slideshows, the best practices for implementing them, and how to get started with placing one on your website.
What is a website slideshow?
A website slideshow, also known as a “slider,” is a web page feature for presenting multiple images in a gallery-like manner. A slider displays one image at a time, and cycles between images automatically after a timeout and/or after a user input, such as a swipe or a button click.
Specifically, online businesses tend to use sliders on their homepage to communicate their missions or to showcase CTAs for new products. Take this simple example from Microsoft’s website :
This style of presentation aids the browsing experience in two primary ways. First, it draws the viewer in by placing important content above the fold, no scrolling required. This content could be new products or offers, an announcement or blog post, or anything else visitors should know.
Second, web slideshows can add visual flair to your pages. For example, cycling through big, vibrant images creates a memorable experience and can even evoke certain positive emotions in readers that they then associate with your brand. This is especially effective for artist portfolios, media companies, and other organizations with a strong emphasis on aesthetics.
When to Use a Web Slideshow
You’ll find sliders across the web, but there are some cases in particular when they work particularly well. Let’s do a quick rundown of their best uses:
New Products/Offers
Place a slider on your homepage and populate it with CTAs showcasing the latest your business has to offer, à la the Microsoft example above. New to CTAs? Check out our favorite examples .
General Information
Many organizations use sliders to communicate their mission, strategy, or story. You’ll see this frequently on sites for consulting agencies, nonprofit and educational organizations, and special projects without a physical product to present.
Product Showcase
Rather than cycling through multiple products, you might focus on one product or product line. With this approach, each slide can explain a different aspect, benefit, or iteration of your product.
Rather than presenting everything at once, a slider breaks down the information into digestible pieces of content. For example, check out this sleek design from Nike, showcasing 15 years of the Dunk sneaker line.
Media companies, creative organizations, and freelance creatives often use sliders to highlight their latest or best work. You might present multiple images from a single project, or multiple projects with links to their dedicated pages on your site.
Featured Articles
News sites and blogs with frequent updates can add CTAs for their latest or most popular content in a slideshow. Avoid plain text CTAs here — instead, use featured images for each post to direct users’ eyes toward your new content.
Now that we’ve seen what sliders can do, let’s next discuss how to implement them. And yes, there is a wrong way to make a slider.
Web Slideshow Best Practices
- Enable automatic and manual transitions.
- Visually indicate the number of slides.
- Optimize for page performance.
- Mind the transition effects.
- Make it mobile-friendly.
- Make it accessible.
From a usability standpoint, sliders are a bit of a double-edged sword. Due to their popularity, slideshows are familiar to the vast majority of people who land on your page, and they should have no issue understanding the purpose of the feature.
However, this also means that poorly-designed sliders will disengage users very quickly, especially if it’s the literal first thing they see. For this reason, it’s essential to carefully plan out your slideshow element and follow these six best practices:
1. Enable automatic and manual transitions.
As I mentioned, web slideshows can rotate through their content automatically based on a time, or manually when a user clicks an arrow button or swipes the screen.
We recommend your slider allows for both methods. On page load, the slider transitions automatically, providing enough time for the user to take in each image. If a user wants to change slides themselves, they can do this too, which might deactivate the timed transitions. This approach gives users better control over the content they want to view. Also, this is how most web sliders are implemented, so it’s intuitive for visitors.
To aid users, place your arrow buttons on both sides of the element (left and right side, or top and bottom). These buttons can be visible within the element by default, or appear when a user hovers over the slideshow. That style choice is up to you.
2. Visually indicate the number of slides.
It’s a good idea to signal how many total slides there are in your slider, so users know how much content is left to view. You can do this with thumbnails that appear on hover-over, numbers (e.g., 1/5, 2/5…), or another subtle visual cue like in the Microsoft example above.
3. Optimize for page performance.
If your page takes more than a few seconds to load, visitors will start losing interest. Many won’t even see the full slider you worked so hard on.
First, think about the number of images in your slideshow. The more slides, the longer the load time, so only include the slides you need. Save the rest of your content for later on the page. Then, optimize your slider images by reducing the file size for each image as much as possible.
Finally, many slideshow builders will implement lazy loading . Only the current slide will load first, and hidden slides won’t load until requested to be shown. This feature spreads out loading needs as much as possible, so look out for it in your search for a slider builder.
4. Mind the transition effects.
Transitions are one seemingly small detail of sliders that folks have very much grown accustomed to, and anything outside the norm could be off-putting.
You might be tempted to bolster your slide transitions with a dissolve effect or a star wipe. I admire your taste, but try to resist that urge and keep your transitions simple. You’re best off going with a simple fade effect or horizontal/vertical pan. This call is up to you, but the less distracting and jarring your transition, the better.
5. Make it mobile-friendly.
Sliders are highly-dynamic, image-heavy elements. If your module isn’t designed to work on smaller screens, it might come out looking like a highly-dynamic, image-heavy mess.
As they make up close to half of your traffic , do your mobile visitors a favor and apply responsive web design principles to your sliders (reputable slider builders and plugins can do this). Or, consider removing the slider from your mobile site altogether to reduce clutter.
6. Make it accessible.
Finally, all of your sliders should be as accessible as you can make them. This means mobile responsiveness, image alt text for each slide (and a textual alternative for the slideshow itself if possible), enabling manual slide transitions, and triggering these transitions with arrow keys in addition to button clicks.
How to Make a Slideshow for a Webpage
Want to give sliders a shot? You have a few options. Let’s review what’s available, from least technical to most technical implementation.
Use a slideshow builder.
For a lightweight solution, use specialized web slideshow building software. With these tools, simply pick your slider content, tweak the settings, and embed the slider element into your page. Start with a free tool like Bannersnack or Cincopa and see how you like it, then consider upgrading to a paid option.
Popular website builders also enable slider functionality, either natively or through either a third-party add-on. Make sure these tools can make your slideshows both responsive and accessible to users.
Use a WordPress slider theme/plugin.
If your website is built on the WordPress CMS, many themes come with built-in slider modules. There are also numerous free and premium slider plugins that will add slideshow functionality to your site, on any post or page. For your WooCommerce store, consider a WooCommerce slider plugin for product displays.
We recommend adding sliders with plugin over a theme, since changing your theme won’t scrap your slideshow. That said, premium themes with sliders are quite convenient in this case.
Manually program a slider.
If you’re feeling brave, try coding an image slider plugin yourself. To work properly, a slider needs HTML, CSS, and JavaScript , the three big languages in frontend development.
Both W3Schools and freeCodeCamp offer tutorials for building your image slider. Or follow our guide to building an image carousel in Bootstrap CSS . Program the slider in, then tweak the CSS to style your new module to fit the rest of your website.
Bonus: Create a Video Slideshow
As an alternative to a manually programmed interactive image slider, you can opt for a video slideshow that displays the same information. If you’re short on time or resources, we highly recommend the free Slideshow Maker from Canva . This tool was designed to be fast, intuitive, and easy for anyone to use, including those without design chops. With Canva, you can easily create slideshows from templates themed for different niches, like explainers, food, and fashion. Populate your slideshow with images and videos from your own library and from Canva’s library of stock media. Then, customize your slideshow with icons, illustrations, animations, and music. Finally, download your slideshow for free (and nope, there’s no watermark).

Not Just a PowerPoint
Web slideshows aren’t perfectly suited for everyone. However, if you want to emphasize visuals while lowering your bounce rate, we recommend trying them out.
When adding a slider, keep our best practices in mind, and ensure that it serves the overall mission of your site, rather than distract from it. Finally, be sure to keep them visually pleasing and engaging for all. This isn’t a brightly lit conference room, it’s your business!

Create stunning slideshows with these 3 tips
Great slideshows have three simple things in common. Forget them and your viewers will be left wanting. Remember them and your views will skyrocket.
1. Tell a story
All videos need a story to succeed. Whether it’s a 7-second YouTube marketing ad or a 2-minute explainer on your website, you have to tell a story. Here are two story structures that are easy to master when creating a slideshow:
If you want to show people something that happened — like your holiday — a linear story is enough. All you have to do is add your slides in the order they occurred.
- If you’re selling something, start by framing the viewer’s problem then explaining how your product or service solves it.
2. Keep your text short
When it comes to video, a few words will get you further than a lot. Let your videos and pictures do the talking. Keep your text brief and your viewers will love you for it.
Thankfully, every scene in your Biteable video comes with a recommended number of characters to keep your writing sharp. Stay within the limits and your video will be concise and easy to read.
3. Make it visually spectacular
Every great video is a pleasure to watch. Biteable offers a host of options to make your slideshow as engaging as possible. Select from a huge range of animation , professional video clips, and loads of text effects.
Slideshow maker FAQs
Your questions answered about all things slideshow.
How do I make a slideshow for free?
You can make a slideshow for free, but we don’t recommend this if you’re making it for business. Most paid slideshow apps are reasonably priced and include features like quality stock footage and music, custom animated text, and premium effects. Your slideshow will look more professional with these additions.
How do I make a slideshow of pictures?
Making a slideshow of pictures is easy with the right tool. With a quality online slideshow maker, you can easily upload your pictures and turn them into video snippets that look and feel like a professional slideshow. A good slideshow-making app will let you do all this with the click of a button.
How can I make a video slideshow with music and pictures?
Making a video slideshow with music and pictures takes 5 steps:
- Pick a template. (Good online slideshow apps have plenty.)
- Upload pictures.
- Choose music. (Stock music from the app or upload your own.)
- Add animated text. (Optional.)
- Share your slideshow. (The best slideshow apps give you a link for easy sharing.)
How can I make a slideshow on my computer?
Making a slideshow on your computer with a desktop app is one option, but you have to store your large slideshow video files on your own computer or cloud storage. Online slideshow apps are a better choice. You still access the app from your computer, but your slideshows are stored on the app and can be shared via a link.
How do I make a slideshow with a video?
Making a slideshow with a video is similar to making one with pictures. You can even combine pictures and video clips into the same slideshow.
- Upload your pictures and videos into a slideshow app.
- Click to add them to your slideshow timeline.
- Drag and drop to adjust the order.
- Choose a background track.
What is a good video slideshow app?
When it comes to good video slideshow apps, we’re biased toward Biteable (of course). But in general, if you want a professional-looking video slideshow, look for an app that has templates so you don’t have to start from scratch. Also look for an easy-to-use interface and premium features like custom animations and text effects.
Where can I make a slideshow video?
The easiest place to make a slideshow video is on an online video making app. Find an app with slideshow video templates that come pre-built with well-paced transitions. A high-quality app will have easy editing features so you can customize your template as much as you like.

25 Photo Slideshow Examples in Web Design To Boost Your Creativity
The photo slideshow trend has been around for over 10 years in web design, but the technology behind it has evolved quite a bit in the last few years.
In 2021, HTML5 sliders are all about oversize pictures, creative motion animations, and bold color.
Since above the fold content became a proven way to hook your audience at first glance, engage and convert, many of the biggest brands around use the trend.
A responsive slider works great for e-commerce businesses and provides a cool option to showcase your products and create atmosphere. If you use HTML5 technology, you can have a responsive photo slider without the clutter that can slow down your website.

1. Photo sliders for food websites
You can’t go wrong with some beautiful food photography if it suits your website’s theme. Look at how delicious Pierre’s site looks! Mouthwatering, isn’t it? Use an above the fold food photo slider to illustrate a cooking blog, a restaurant or any food-related business.

2. Photo slideshow example for e-commerce websites
A cool image can be enhanced by an even cooler copy! Like this one, from Bodybuilding . Get a funny pic, combine it with some oversized lettering design and a great concept and bam, you’ve got an impressive design that converts.

3. Image slider example for NGO’s
They can make a cool design for your charity or NGO; if chosen right, images are an awesome way to reach the emotional side of your visitor and make him donate for your cause. Check out Surfrider’s website to get some inspiration on how to choose your images to create a classical photo slider.

4. Fashion website slider example
Take a walk down the catwalk with a cool carousel for your fashion website. Get inspired by how big fashion brands are using the trend these days and create your own professional slider. Use bold colors, catchy texts, and don’t forget to add a clear, CTA button to maximize your conversions.
Neiman Marcus is a classic example that combines glamour, color, and fashion to bring visitors a really stylish outcome.

5. Sliders in the world of watches
Yes, it’s the perfect time to use sliders! Most of the best-known watches brands are using them to make you become a part of their luxurious world, and for a good reason: they can help build a visual story with only a few frames of awesomeness.
If your business is in the same niche, remember to use high resolution, professional photography, and tell something about your products by showcasing them next to iconic imagery. Like Tissot did with this simple but remarkable website.

6. The legendary e-commerce image slider from Amazon
You know something is great for e-commerce if both Amazon and eBay use it, and that’s precisely the case with the homepage photo slider. Illustrations combined with photographs of the iconic Amazon symbols give a sense of confidence and trust, showing they care about the relationship with the customer.
In e-commerce, it’s all about conversions, so be sure to showcase your products and offers on your home page’s slider.

7. The homelike feeling of the homepage slider
Photography sliders in gray and beige tones can be an awesome way to showcase a home-like, cozy atmosphere. Make your home and decorations website feel just like walking into a home, as Au Lit Fine Linens did here.

8. Sportswear online store slider to suggest an active lifestyle

How to Create a Slideshow with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
A web slideshow is a sequence of images or text that consists of showing one element of the sequence in a certain time interval.
For this tutorial you can create a slideshow by following these simple steps:

Write some markup
Write styles to hide slides and show only one slide..
To hide the slides you have to give them a default style. It'll dictate that you only show one slide if it is active or if you want to show it.
Change the slides in a time interval.
The first step to changing which slides show is to select the slide wrapper(s) and then its slides.
When you select the slides you have to go over each slide and add or remove an active class depending on the slide that you want to show. Then just repeat the process for a certain time interval.
Keep it in mind that when you remove an active class from a slide, you are hiding it because of the styles defined in the previous step. But when you add an active class to the slide, you are overwritring the style display:none to display:block , so the slide will show to the users.

What is a slide show maker?
To create a slide show, you’ll want to use a slide show maker—or slide show app—which is a software program or online service that enables you create digital slide shows with text, photos, videos, music, and other special effects. The full range of slide show features and functionality varies from program to program.
Once you’ve created a slide show, it can be published on the internet or shared with others as a video file. Additionally, you can use slide shows to create dynamic, interactive content on websites.
Slide show software can be used for a variety of purposes, such as creating presentations for work, school, and even your personal life. For instance, slide shows are often used to:
Display photos during an event
Slide shows are a great way to share photos and videos with guests at a wedding, birthday, or other special event.
Create a digital photo album
Some slide shows are created for personal reasons, such as sharing important memories with family or friends.
Highlight products or services
Businesses can use slide shows to showcase their products, promote special offers and sales, or pitch their services to potential clients.
Enhance teaching, training, and public speaking
Slide shows can also provide helpful visuals in educational settings, classroom presentations, and public speaking forums.
What you need to make a slide show
When it comes to creating a slide show, there are a few things you'll need to get started. First and foremost, you'll need a device equipped with presentation software or access to an online slide show app. Secondly, you’ll need a way to display your slide show, which usually means connecting your device to a projector or big screen TV. Beyond that, you’ll need some visual aids and other media to bring your slide show to life.
Explore each of these slide show requirements in more detail:
Devices and equipment —To create a slide show, you’ll use a computer or other device—such as a tablet or mobile phone—with PowerPoint or a similar program installed. You will also need a way to project the slides onto a screen or wall. This can be done with a projector, but if you don't have one available, you can use your TV or computer monitor. Simply connect your device to the TV or monitor using an HDMI cable and select the correct input. Your slides will now be projected onto the screen.
Media —Of course, creating a slide show requires media that adds visual and even audio elements to your presentation. This can be anything from photos and videos to music and text. You can use search engines to find copyright-free media to use in your slide show.
Another option is to purchase royalty-free stock footage, images, and audio files from online media libraries. This could be a bit more expensive, but it guarantees that you have the legal right to use the media in your presentation.
Finally, you can also use your own videos, images, and even music. While this can be a time-consuming process, it does allow you to create custom content specifically for your slide show.
Slide show creator —To bring your slide show together, you’ll need a slide show creator. The slide show software you choose will depend on your presentation requirements and preferences. There are many slide show makers on the market, with Microsoft PowerPoint being one of the most popular and widely used programs globally.
How to choose a slide show maker
When choosing slide show software, it's important to consider the features and specifications that are most important to you. Some of the questions you might ask when choosing a slide show maker include:
- How easy is the software to use?
- Is the software Mac or PC compatible?
- Can I access and edit my slide show on the cloud?
- What kind of slide shows can be created with the software?
- How many photos and/or videos can be included in a slide show?
- Can text and other elements be added to slide shows?
- Are transitions and effects available for slide shows?
- Is music accompaniment an option?
- What are the options for saving and sharing your slide show?
Building a slide show doesn't have to be difficult. With the right software, you can create an engaging presentation in no time.
Six steps for creating a slide show
1. Plan your slide show
Before getting too deep into your slide show project, it’s a good idea to select and save the photos and videos you want to use. This helps you create a slide show more efficiently and purposefully, ensuring a better outcome.
4. Import media
Start adding photos, videos, and other desired media to your slides. You can upload these from your device or online media libraries. If you planned your slide show in advance, you should have all your media saved in one place.
2. Launch your slide show app
Once you’ve decided on a slide show maker, you’ll want to launch the app from whatever device you’ll be using to create your presentation.
5. Add text, music, and transitions
After you’ve arranged the visuals in your slide show, you can provide additional information and communicate sentiment using custom text, music, and timed slide transitions.
3. Choose your theme
Most slide show software offers a variety of pre-set themes, colors, and designs. You can choose one that best suits your slide show or create a custom theme using the program’s various tools and features.
6. Record, save, and share your slide show
Now you’re ready to record your slide show, which can include a voiceover or Cameo . Once your slide show is complete, you can save it as a video to your device or to the cloud, such as OneDrive . You can access your saved slide show at any time to display at events, use in meetings, share online, or send directly to other people.
How to make a slide show with photos
Adding photos to your slide show is a great way to enliven your presentation and make it more visually interesting. Here are a few different ways you can add photos to your slide show in PowerPoint.
Add photos from your device
Whether you’re using a computer, tablet, phone, or other device, you can use photos that are saved to your device to create your slide show. In PowerPoint, simply select “Insert” then “Pictures” from the program menu, then choose “This Device.” This will open your photo library and allow you to find the photos you want to use. Once you’ve selected the photos that you want to import, just click on the "Insert" button and they will be added to your slide show. If you’re using a pre-made theme, you can also right-click the image in the slide show and select “Change Picture.” Again, you will choose “This Device” to access your photo library. After inserting your photo, you can reposition it on your slide or resize it however you like.
Use stock photos
Another way to add photos in PowerPoint is to follow the same process you would when adding photos from your device, but when prompted to choose your photo source, select “From Stock Images” instead of “This Device.” This will display a library of photos that you can use in your slide show without worrying about copyright infringement. There are thousands of stock images available in most slide show maker programs. Once the library is open, you can explore existing photo categories or use keywords to search for photos that fit your needs.
Explore online photo sources
Online photos are images you can insert into a PowerPoint slide show directly from the internet, as opposed to using those you have saved on your device. This is a convenient option if you don't have photos already prepared for your slide show, or if you can’t find the right kind of photo in the stock image library. However, there are some potential risks associated with using online photos, namely that you must be careful to use royalty-free images so not to infringe on any copyrights. In PowerPoint, there is a filtering option to ensure your search results only show royalty-free photos. Inserting photos from online sources follows the same process as the previous two methods, but this time, you’ll select “From Online Sources.”
How to add videos, music, and text
How to add videos to PowerPoint slide shows
Adding videos to your slide show involves accessing videos from your device, a stock video library, or online video sources—just as you would when adding photos. In this case, however, you’ll navigate to the menu in PowerPoint and select “Insert,” followed by “Media,” then “Video.” Once your video appears on your slide, you can resize or reposition it to fit your presentation needs. You can also set your video to play automatically in the slide show by selecting “Playback” on the menu and choosing “Start Automatically.”
How to add music to PowerPoint slide shows
Much like adding videos, you can add music to individual slides in PowerPoint by navigating to “Insert” on the menu, then “Media,” and finally “Audio.” You can then import music from your device, or you can record your own audio directly in PowerPoint. However, if you want your audio to play across multiple slides in your presentation—for example, as background music for a slide show—you’ll have to take a couple of extra steps. Once you’ve imported your audio file, select “Playback” from the menu and choose the “Play in Background” option. Your music will now play across all slides. You can set one song to loop for the duration of the slide show, or you can add more songs to play continuously throughout the slide show.
How to add text to PowerPoint slide shows
Premade themes in PowerPoint make adding text slide shows easy. On slides that already have templated content, you can simply click on the text and begin editing. In addition to changing what the text says, you can resize, recolor, reposition, and add special effects to the text. Of course, you can also change the font—or style—of the text. Most of this can be done from the “Home” tab on the menu while certain effects, such as shadows, can be found on the “Shape Format” tab. If you’re designing your presentation slides from scratch, or want to create additional text, find “Insert” on the menu, then choose “Text Box” or “Word Art,” depending on your desired text effect.
Discover custom slide show settings
Add even more effects to your PowerPoint slide show with custom settings like timing, transitions, and looping.
Set slide show timing
Adding timing to your slide show is a great way to control the pacing and flow of your presentation. To add timing in PowerPoint, go to the "Transitions" tab on the menu and find the "Advance Slide" area. Make sure the box next to “After:” is checked, then input the amount of time you’d like each slide to appear on-screen. The slides will automatically advance, creating a movie-like effect that’s great for events and special occasions.
Create slide show transitions
Now that you’ve added automatic timing to your slide show, you can make it more visually appealing by creating slide transitions. Transitions are special effects that allow you to animate the way your slides change from one to the next, and there are a variety of different transitions in PowerPoint that you can choose from. You can add these transitions to your slide show from the "Transitions” tab. From there, you’ll select the transition you want to add. To preview the transition, simply click on it. You can click “Apply To All” to automatically add the same transition to every slide in your slide show, or you can manually add different transitions to different slides.
Loop your slide show
If you want your slide show to play continuously until you choose to turn it off, you can set your PowerPoint presentation to loop. This will ensure your slide show automatically starts over from the beginning once it reaches the end. To get started, navigate to the “Slide Show” tab on the menu and select “Set Up Slide Show.” When the settings window opens, check the box next to “Loop continuously until ‘ESC’” and then click “OK.” When you’re ready to turn your slide show off, simply press the Esc key on your keyboard.

12 Amazing Slider Website Designs [Examples & When to use]

Updated on: October 30, 2023
Web design techniques exist in many forms in today’s world, trends move fast and change all the time. The same goes for web design patterns, some people love certain trends and some people hate certain trends. Some can really engage users and others can end up distracting users and annoying them, pushing them away.
One web design technique is sliders.
They allow for content to be displayed in a way that maximizes the space on the screen. A lot of information can be shown with the use of a great slider website .
However, it’s best to understand what they are and when they are useful, they can easily become annoying and poorly timed.
What is a Website Slider?
It is an element on a web page that slides left or right (or even any other direction!) It’s a way to display content on a page in one area where the content can fly into place, displaying huge amounts of content in one area.
Sliders are basically a slideshow of information that can be a combination of images, text, icons, and links, etc. One famous slider example is a website carousel which can be used to display multiple images across the width of a screen in one area.
An example might be a carousel of products with a text description or a showcase of a portfolio:

Check out what is a slider? if you still need some more clarification on this.
Eye-Catching Slider Website Examples
We’ve seen an example of one of the most famous types of slider websites, that is a carousel of images and text but there are many more slider types to learn.
Let’s go through some inspiring examples you can use yourself in your own design and get ideas from.
1. Zara Website Slider
Your browser does not support the video tag.
Zara is a worldwide well-known clothes brand that has decided to make their whole website a full screen slider. This can be a powerful tool from the marketing perspective and, at the same time, provide a modern user experience that will for sure create an impact on their visitors and potential clients.
This kind of website sliders got popular after Apple used the same website layout for their iPhone 5C and the same sliding technique. (Also used by the BBC website , The Telegraph , Dreamworks and many other big brands)
If you are interested in this kind of design, you can replicate it by using the fullPage.js JavaScript component . If you use WordPress, check out the Elementor and Gutenberg plugins for it.
2. Split Sliding Website
Unlike traditional sliders that have one single sliding element, Split Theme splits the screen in two and slides each of them in opposite directions. This ends up creating an interesting effect that some websites can benefit from.
You can get this effect by using multiScroll.js component for JavaScript or the Split Theme from Themify .
3. Squarespace Website Slider
This lovely design from Squarespace really shows how good it looks when you combine great photos with the slider design. The large stunning images are easy to navigate and this design is a great way to show off a portfolio that could look as awesome as these 9 unbeatable online portfolio examples .
If you want to achieve something similar you’ll find many possible components on our curated list of jQuery carousel plugins
4. Dreamworks Website Slider
A great example with how lots of sliders and carousels can be used to make a really effective website that is extremely interactive.
Using sliders and carousels can enable you to include a lot of images in one place, users can slide through interactive content and decide what they want to click.
Unlike the previous slider, this one will slide 3 items at once, making it faster to navigate.
Check out our curated list of jQuery carousel plugins if you want you are interested in building something similar.
5. Xiaomi Website Slider
Unlike other traditional sliding carousels, Xiami uses a website slider that fades between slides. This creates a simple, fast, and less distracting slider that serves the same purpose.
If you are into full screen pages, you can get something similar by using fullPage.js together with the Fading Effect extension .
6. Diagonal Website Slider
This is a much less conventional slider yet a beautiful one. This diagonal slider adds a different touch and will certainly create an impression on any visitor.
7. WebGl Slider
WebGL Sliders usually mean one thing: beautiful animations. And this case won’t be different. The WebGL slider for Webflow provides multiple effects on each of the clonable demos and they are all quite impressive!
8. LookBack Slider Website Design

Slider website design is all about having that perfect animation and impressive transitions without being annoying. One area of business that gets this right is the fashion industry, they have used this LookBack design to show off their products.
A LookBack design is where the images are auto-played vertically in opposite directions.
If you are looking for amazing slider effects you can get inspired by these 20 animated sliders .
9. Interactive Text and Image Slider
This slider website example shows how well a slider works with text and buttons that the user can interact with. The image can engage the user with the text and act as a Call To Action (CTA) as well. You can use these CSS Button hover effects to animate your buttons.
10. Full Screen Scrollable Slider Design
This website uses a full screen slider design, has multiple pages or steps, and allows the user to navigate by simply scrolling.
If you are looking for a website slider solution to do something similar, you may be interested in fullPage.js as mentioned before. This would allow you to easily create full screen scrollable pages.
11. Amazon eCommerce Image Slider Design

Both Amazon and other online retailers use an image slider, they are effective and a great way to quickly make a website interactive. Illustrations combined with large images allow a reader to understand what the product is all about with little text, which is what eCommerce is all about. User conversations and sliders can help you do that.
12. Full Width Slider Website Design
This is a more traditional kind of slider. It’s a basic carousel of items with a small zoom/scale effect combined with an opacity/fading one.
It’s the combination of these two effects that makes it look a bit more modern than the average carousel.
Disadvantages Using Website Sliders
Website sliders can be a useful tool to engage users and keep them interested in the content being displayed but sliders get their fair share of hate and there is a good reason for that. They must be used properly and with the right content.
Some arguments against website sliders are that they can be confusing , they present users with multiple options at once and users might not be sure how to navigate the web page. Leading to a poor user experience (UX) and degraded user retention. Each slider option is seen as equal because the content can not always be seen right away, making the user feel like they don’t know which way to go. Sometimes it can be unclear.
If sliders are not used correctly, some users end up viewing them as adverts or popups and end up trying to skip them and get passed to the “real” content of the website.
Website Sliders can slow down a web page as well, lots of sliding images and text can be heavy on the browser can cause performance issues, this will often impact SEO and user conversion rates very quickly. Most of the time users will click away if they don’t understand or get what they want within seconds of your website loading.
Most users hate auto-playing videos because they are annoying and get in the way, the same can be said for website sliders. Sometimes static images and text copy are just easier to navigate and scroll through, the user can understand the information straight away.
However just because there are some negatives against website sliders, it doesn’t mean they have positives or that they can’t be used in an effective way. It’s about using them at the right time with the best content that suits them.
When to use Website Sliders
We’ve learned about the negative impacts of sliders and we’ve learned about the positives of sliders, so when should you use them? Let’s go through some more examples of good use cases for sliders.
Before we go onto some good examples of website sliders, let’s understand the basics are how to use them correctly
Website sliders should be used at the right time, in the right place. Sliders can be good when used to save space, if you have a lot of information to display, a slider is a simple, responsive way to get content displayed across multiple devices, efficiently.
Website Sliders help consolidate web content into one location , saving time on scrolling or height bloated pages when there is a lot of content to show.
Animation and transition effects help engage users and keep them interested . Visuals between slides keep users viewing only the content they need while they consume it, once they have finished they can easily move on to focus on new content, without previous content getting in the way.
Slider websites take full advantage of the entire screen space , this is good for mobile devices as small screens benefit from content that utilizes the full browser viewport. Images and text can be bigger and easier for viewing, especially for accessibility reasons.
How to use website correctly
When used correctly, website sliders prevent users from being distracted, content is kept in view for what they need at that time, so it is easier to digest subjects, videos or images.
Now we can see some great examples of how and when to use website sliders
1. Use Easy-To-Navigate Sliders
They are not right for every design or structure, think of sliders as a way to enhance content or engage users into a particular topic, not as a way to display the content you didn’t have a plan for.
Make sure sliders don’t distract or annoy users by restricting information or reducing how quickly users can access information. The navigation path for sliders must be clear and easy to navigate, not confusing.
You want the animations and transitions to be quick, smooth, and lag-free , so don’t go too crazy with these, remember every device needs to handle each animation as well. A simple fade and short transition will be enough to get the effect across, otherwise, it might look tacky.

Take the above example, we can clearly see that a slider is being used. At the bottom left we can see circles which quickly indicate it is content to slide to, on the bottom right we have a numbered system to see where we are, it’s quick to understand what is going on.
It’s important to make sure you have a clear indicator with arrows or numbers for easy navigation. Mobile devices should be able to swipe and navigate that way. It is probably best to turn on auto-play, this can make users feel on edge because the timer effect gets annoying when reading content and it just moves without warning. Auto-playing is only useful for smaller content or when moving through images or logos.
2. Use Website Sliders to Tell a Story
A visitor who sees a large amount of information, lists, images or steps, etc. It can be overwhelming for a user and it is hard for them to follow along, whereas a slider website design can help tell a story.
For example, a slider like fullPage.js can be used to help showcase product or service features to a user, especially something that is already engaging like a video game. A slider can offer an easy-to-navigate set of steps to follow , keeping only the required information in view for the user.
A good use for telling a story is onboarding new users or employees, a slider is interactive and easy to navigate without overwhelming the user with information.
3. Use Sliders to Help Viewers Understand Quicker
As I’ve said before, a slider is a great way to consolidate and display large amounts of information into one place and split up large chunks of text or diagrams. A slider can easily be used as a hero header for a website, helping the user understand much quicker what the website has to offer.
Often a user that comes onto a website wants to know straight away what the website does and what benefits it gives them. A slider can be a quicker way to reassure a user what they came for. It provides a brief overview of content or features in a consumable manner, it allows visitors to make a quicker decision on the information they have been given.
Sliders are great on websites that get updated often. Sliders can be used as focus points for new information or content. Allowing users to get the latest updates without navigating to a lengthy article at first.
Advantages of a Well Designed Slider Example
Mentioned throughout this article is a slider project called fullPage.js and it contains multiple features which help it stand out from many slider projects. With all the negative points about sliders, fullPage.js is only positive, it doesn’t break any of the rules of a good slider.
The example below shows how fullPage.js makes it easy to navigate , nothing is confusing to us at a glance. We have big easy to use arrows and we can quickly understand where we are in the slider navigation with the dots on the right side of the page.

Again, the animations and transitions are simple , smooth, and not crazy. They don’t distract from the content and help create a focal point for the user.
And best of all the whole thing is responsive and touch-ready for mobile devices. It works as well as it does on the desktop as it does on mobiles.
We can easily add content to the slider website page and we have multiple ways of expanding so the design doesn’t become cluttered as we can continue up, down, or left and right.
Not every website will benefit from using a slider-based design, you need the right content and use cases so that you don’t misuse the slider design. It can be a powerful and engaging element when used correctly, which we covered in this article.
Don’t rely on the user’s instincts: make sure any slider has clear navigation and layouts , otherwise, they will get confused and click away. It is important for sliders to fit within your brand and design, otherwise, they will look tacky and like you just didn’t know what to do for a specific page.
Delays are problematic and should probably be disabled, let the user navigate through in their own time, don’t annoy or rush them through information.
Use website sliders to tell a story and help the user navigate through large amounts of information and images. Sliders are a great way to create a focal point that is dynamic and interactive.

How to view photos in a slideshow in Windows 11
Posted: November 20, 2023 | Last updated: November 20, 2023
Quick Links
View photos in a slideshow using the windows 11 photos app, view photos as a desktop slideshow, view photos as a lock screen slideshow, view photos as a slideshow in google photos, make a video slideshow with clipchamp.
Photos can hold very special memories, and setting up a slideshow is a great way to relive them and look back at great times in your life. There's no shortage of ways to set up a slideshow, and Windows 11 makes it easy to do it in a wide range of ways. Whether you want to actively display your photos or have them shown on the desktop, let's take a look at some of the tools for creating photo slideshows on Windows 11.
If you haven't yet, it's a good idea to put your photos into the same folder. You can store them locally or on a OneDrive folder, if you have an internet connection.
If you're actively trying to show off photos in a slideshow, the Windows 11 Photos is arguably the best way to do it. This app lets you choose the photos to view, adjust transitions, play music, and more. Here's how to use it:
- Open the Photos app. You can find it in the Start menu.
- If your pictures are in a specific folder, use the Folders option on the left to navigate to the photos you want to show off.
- To use only selected pictures for the slideshow, click the checkbox in the corner of each picture you want to use before starting the slideshow.
- Once the slideshow starts, click the Slideshow options button (it looks like a music note) to change the music, transitions, and whether the slideshow should loop after showing all the photos. Close
- The bar at the top can also be used to pause the slideshow, change the volume, or minimize the slideshow.
- To quit the slideshow, move the mouse over the top right corner of the screen to show the Close button.
If you want photos to constantly display as a slideshow on your desktop background, you have that option, too. This makes it so your favorite pictures are always visible at a moment's notice. Here's how:
- Open the Settings app. You can find it in the Start menu.
- Click Personalization in the menu bar on the left.
- Click Background .
- Next to Personalize your background , open the dropdown menu and choose Slideshow .
- Click the Browse button to find the folder you want to use for your slideshow.
- Click Choose this folder once you have the right one.
Changing the picture every minute may impact the performance of some PCs.
- You can change additional settings like shuffling the picture order or choose how images should behave to fit the desktop if the aspect ratio doesn't match.
If you'd like to have a slideshow playing on the lock screen when your PC is inactive, or simply see a different picture whenever you turn on your PC, that's also an option:
- Open the Settings app.
- Click Personalization in the left-side menu.
- Click Lock screen .
- Next to Personalize your lock screen , open the dropdown menu and choose Slideshow .
- Click Browse to find a folder to pull pictures from. You can add multiple folders, but only one at a time.
- If you want to remove a folder, click Remove next to its name.
- You can customize Advanced slideshow settings to further tweak the slideshow. This includes the option to show the lock screen when your PC is inactive rather than turning off the screen, so the lock screen acts more like a screen saver.
If you have your photos stored in Google Photos, you can also view them as a slideshow online. The easiest way to do this is to create an album, if you haven't already.
- Open Google Photos in your browser.
- Click the Upload button near the top right corner to choose pictures to upload (if they're not already on Google Photos).
- Choose the pictures to upload and click Open .
- Select the photos you uploaded by clicking the checkmark in the top left corner of each one. You can select all photos with the same date using the checkmark next to the date header.
- Click the + (plus) button and then click Album .
- Click New album to create a new album with your photos.
- Enter a name for the album.
- Click the checkmark next to Edit album to save your changes.
- To start a slideshow, click the three-dot button in the top right corner then choose Slideshow .
- The slideshow will begin.
If you want to get deeper into it and make a video slideshow you can share with others as a file, you can use Clipchamp to create a video from your photos. Here's how it works:
- Open Clipchamp on your PC. It should be in the Start menu, but you can also use it in your browser.
- If you haven't yet, log in or create an account.
- Click Create a new video .
- Click Import media to choose photos to add to your slideshow.
