Tips for Filing Forms by Mail
This page contains tips for filing forms by mail.
Many USCIS forms can be filed online. You can review the list of Forms Available to File Online , check out the Benefits of Filing Online , and learn how to Create a USCIS Online Account . If you are filing online, see our Tips for Filing Forms Online page.
You may download and print forms for free from the All Forms page. You may also order forms that are not available to file online on our Forms by Mail page.
Please be sure to carefully read and follow the form filing instructions. Form fees, eligibility requirements, fee waiver eligibility, required documents, and mailing addresses vary depending on the form you are filing and why you are filing it. These tips will help ensure we accept your application, petition, or request package for processing.
Complete Your Form Accurately
- Remember to sign your form in the space provided for your signature. We will reject and return any unsigned form.
- Use the current form edition. You can download forms from our website , complete them electronically, and then print your forms to submit by mail. If you need help downloading and printing forms, read our instructions .
- Do not mail a form that you have already submitted online.
- If you hand write your answers, use black ink. Make sure that everything you write on the form is clear so the information you provided can be clearly read when we process your form.
- Ensure that the form edition date and page numbers are visible at the bottom of the printed pages and that all pages have been completed with the same edition of the form. If any of the form’s pages are missing or have been completed with a different edition of the form, we may reject your application.
- Complete the entire form unless the form directs you to skip one or more items. If you do not complete all parts of the form we may reject your submission for missing information. If you make an error, start over with a clean form.
- Do not use highlighters or correction fluid or tape. The scanners we use will not properly read information that is greyed out, highlighted or corrected using correction fluid or tape.
- If filing multiple forms, write your name, date of birth, and A-Number (if any) exactly the same way on each form (unless you have had a legal change of name or date of birth and provide proof of such).
- Pay the correct fee . We will reject forms submitted with incorrect or incomplete fees. Use the Fee Calculator to help you determine the correct fee.
- If you are filing multiple applications, petitions, or requests, we recommend sending separate payments for each application, otherwise if one payment is submitted and one of the applications, petitions, or requests is rejected, all others will be rejected as well.
Assemble Your Application, Petition, or Request
- Check or money order or Form G-1450, Authorization for Credit Card Transactions . If you are paying by check or money order, write the form you are filing and your A-Number or other applicable identification on the check or money order. If you are paying with a credit card, see our Pay with a Credit Card webpage.
- Form G-1145, Request for e-Notification (if applicable).
- Form G-28, Notice of Entry of Appearance as Attorney or Accredited Representative (if applicable).
- Form being filed.
- Form supplements being filed, if applicable.
- Submit the documents or evidence listed in the form instructions.
- Supporting documents must be in English or accompanied by a complete English translation which the translator has certified as complete and accurate. The English translation must be accompanied by the translator's certification that they are competent to translate from the foreign language into English.
- Submit legible copies of official documents, but do not send the original documents unless specifically requested in the form instructions or applicable regulations. If you send an original document with your form, it may become part of the record or be destroyed. We will not return it to you automatically.
- In most cases, a copy of a USCIS notice, if available, is acceptable evidence of a prior, related filing. If you prefer to provide a copy of a complete prior application, petition, or request in support of a new filing, please be sure that the prior application, petition, or request is clearly marked as a “COPY” at the top of each page to ensure it is processed as intended.
- All forms and supporting documents submitted must be single-sided, standard 8½ x 11 letter-size pages.
- Please do not submit evidence using digital media, photo albums, scrapbooks, or binders, which cannot be processed and will be returned to you.
- When providing photos or other attachments, please provide your name and A-Number (if any) at the top of the page or on the back of any photos. If you send original photos with your form, they may become part of the record or be destroyed.
- You may number support pages and include the total number of pages being attached (for example, “page 1 of 11”).
- If you forget to send in supporting documentation with your benefit request package, please do not submit them in a separate package to a USCIS lockbox. Please retain the supporting documents so they can be submitted later, if requested by USCIS.
- Mark the envelope and the cover letter with the nature of the submission. For example, O riginal Submission, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status (Form I-485) .
- Mark the envelope and the cover letter with the form number. For example, Form I-129, Form I-360, or Form I-485.
- Do not use binders or folders that we cannot easily disassemble.
- Do not use heavy-duty staples. Instead, use fasteners or heavy clips to hold together thick or bulky applications or petitions. Two-hole punching the top of the material for easy placement in the file is appreciated. Note: this is only applicable when submitting filings at a USCIS lockbox location. We recommend that you do not use fasteners, hole punch, staple, paper clip, binder clip, or otherwise attach documents to one another when filing directly with a USCIS service center as that may cause delays in scanning the documents into the electronic database systems.
- Sticky tabs assist in locating items listed as attachments. For easy filing, place the tabs on the bottom of the page, not the side. Note: this is only applicable when submitting filing at a USCIS lockbox location. We recommend that you do not place sticky notes on documents when filing directly with a USCIS service center as that may cause delays in scanning the documents into the electronic database systems.
- If you are sending more than one case in an envelope, clearly separate the cases by rubber band or fasteners as noted above.
- If you are resubmitting the packet in response to a Request for Evidence (RFE), please place the notice requesting the additional evidence/information on the top of the packet.
- If you are submitting evidence in support of a previously filed appeal or motion, place a cover letter with “Brief for (Appeal/Motion)” on top of the packet.
Mail Your Application, Petition, or Request
- When addressing the package, be sure to enter the complete address provided on the USCIS website, including the Attn: line, which helps to ensure the application, petition, or request is processed and routed correctly for the type of filing.
- Mail your forms to the address listed on that form’s webpage. You may submit your forms through USPS, FedEx, DHL, or UPS.
- We encourage you to save a copy of your payment, along with any tracking number provided by the courier, for your records and to allow you to verify the status of its delivery.
- If you mail your application, petition, or request to the wrong filing location, we may reject it as improperly filed and return it to you to re-file.
- Forms that are not available to file online are available by mail on our Forms by Mail page. Download and print forms for free from the All Forms page.

Sample I-130 Cover Letter
Updated on 10/21/2023
The Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, is one of the most frequently submitted applications sent to the USCIS. It is required for all family-based immigration, including green card for spouse, green card for parents, green card for child and green card for siblings. When submitting a Form I-130 to the USCIS, a cover letter is not required. However, some applicants like to use a cover letter as a way to show polite etiquette, and others use the cover sheet as a method of organization. In practice, a cover letter is very helpful so that the I-130 immigrant petition could be properly accepted and processed by the USCIS.
The following sample cover letters are prepared by an immigration attorney with extensive experience. Actually, with these cover letters, you may have a clear picture about what documents you need to submit with your I-130 petition. In other words, it can be considered as an I-130 checklist.

U.S citizens or lawful permanent residents may also file an I-130 immigrant petition for their adopted child who has been legally adopted before 16 years old, or before 18 years year old if his or her sibling has been adopted. However, it is recommended to consult an immigration attorney first because I-130 petition for an adoptive child is much more complicated.
Not sure if you’re eligible to file an I-130 petition for your relative? You can free check eligibility through DYgreencard.com without providing any personal information. Free check your eligibility if you are a U.S. citizen and plan to file an I-130 immigrant petition for spouse , parent , child , or sibling , or if you are a lawful permanent resident and plan to file an I-130 immigrant petition for spouse/child .
Special reminder when petitioning spouse who has been in removal proceeding
When someone marries a foreign national while they were the subject of an exclusion, deportation, removal, or rescission proceeding, they might not qualify for an I-130 marriage green card without a bona fide marriage exemption.
I-130 petitioner’s spouse who is inadmissible to the United States on the date of the wedding might consider drafting an explanation to request for a bona fide marriage exemption. This request can make it clear to the USCIS that the union was legally valid where it took place. It can also how that the marriage was entered into in good faith rather than for the purpose of getting a green card. Such explanation should be included in the I-130 cover letter.
Special reminder for an I-130 petitioner who obtained green card through a prior marriage
Those who have remarried after gaining a green card through a prior spouse may also need to include an explanation in the I-130 cover letter. It either explains that the petitioner is a widow or widower, or would state that they entered into their prior marriage in good faith.

How To Write a Cover Letter for Form I-129F (Petition for Alien Fiancé)
To prepare a K-1 fiancé(e) visa application for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), you must complete the required forms, gather supporting documents, and pay fees. It’s not mandatory to include a cover letter in your application packet, but doing so can help keep your application materials organized and make sure you don’t miss any required documents. You can also use the cover letter to highlight anything you want USCIS to know about your visa application. This article explains what a K-1 fiancé visa cover letter is and the elements it should include. There’s also a template you can use to write your own.

What Is a Form I-129F Cover Letter?
You’ll need to file Form I-129F : Petition for Alien Fiancé if you are a U.S. citizen who wants your foreign partner to receive a K-1 visa . Though it’s not required, writing a cover letter to supplement this form can be helpful for USCIS. A cover letter is a document that outlines your application contents and addresses any unusual circumstances you’d like to flag for your application readers.
A cover letter can give your USCIS officer a useful overview of you and your partner’s case. You can also use your cover letter as a personal checklist to make sure you’ve included all necessary documents in your package.
Is a Cover Letter Required for My Form I-129F Application?
USCIS does not require a cover letter for your Form I-129F petition package. However, it’s often beneficial for applicants to include cover letters. A cover letter can help your USCIS officer better understand and evaluate your overall application.
If there is anything unclear about you and your foreign fiancé’s relationship, a cover letter gives you the opportunity to address these concerns upfront. Remember that USCIS only wants to distribute K-1 visas to couples in genuine relationships. If there is anything unusual about how your relationship started or progressed, you may wish to address it with a disclaimer in your cover letter.
If you call attention to any unusual circumstances in your cover letter, you’ll be able to explain your side of the story in greater detail. By giving USCIS greater clarity on your case, you can make it easier for the USCIS officer to process your application.
What Should My K-1 Fiancé(e) Visa Cover Letter Include?
You should begin your Form I-129F cover letter with a heading and greeting. Your heading should provide USCIS officials with your mailing address, your name, and your foreign partner’s name. Your introduction should then explain your reasons for writing this cover letter. Use your introduction to give USCIS a basic overview of your relationship and tell them you are seeking a K-1 visa for your fiancé.
Checklist of Information To Include in Your K-1 Fiancé Visa Cover Letter
USCIS will find it most helpful if you include the following information in your cover letter:
Your contact information
The USCIS address to which you’re sending this letter
Your full name as the petitioner
Your fiancé’s full name as the beneficiary
A note stating which form and visa you are filing an application for
A list of all the supporting documents you’ve included in your package, in bullet points:
You must include evidence of your U.S. citizenship, such as your birth certificate , copy of your naturalization certificate, Form FS-240, an unexpired U.S. passport, or an original statement from a U.S. consular officer verifying that you are a citizen with a valid passport.
You’ll also need evidence that you and your fiancé have legally terminated any previous marriages. For example, you may need to include divorce decrees , annulment orders, or a former spouse’s death certificate.
You’ll need one color passport-style photograph of yourself.
You’ll also need one color passport-style photograph of your fiancé taken within 30 days of filing.
If you or your fiancé have ever changed your name, you’ll need to provide evidence of this legal name change.
You’ll need evidence that you and your fiancé intend to marry within 90 days of their admission into the United States.
Finally, you’ll also need evidence that you and your fiancé have met in person within two years of filing for this visa. Alternatively, you may submit evidence that an in-person meeting would cause extreme hardship or violate strict traditions of your fiancé’s foreign culture.
Your signature and the date
Lastly, you should thank USCIS for their time and conclude your letter. Remember that this cover letter should be the first part of your application package that USCIS sees. You should place it at the top of your overall package before mailing it out to the appropriate USCIS office.

Tips for Writing Your K-1 Fiancé Visa Cover Letter
Be sure to write your letter clearly and concisely. Remember that your cover letter is only a summary of your application contents, so you won’t need to write too many details in this letter. You should also use bullet points when listing your included application materials. Using bullet points will help your USCIS officer more easily understand your application throughout the visa process.
Within your letter, you’ll want to mention that the documents you’ve provided throughout your package are accurate and unaltered original documents or photocopies. If you’ve included any certified translations in your package, be sure to mention this too.

Template cover letter for uscis immigration filings, practice areas, associations.

A Cover Letter has two (2) benefits. First, it is a nice document for a USCIS Officer to receive when they open a packet. It allows the officer to quickly see a snapshot of the filing. Second, the Cover Letter forces the filer to review what they are sending. If Anything important is missing, it is more evident than in a stack of papers 300 to 500 pages thick.
Evidence is “VERY IMPORTANT” for every Immigration Filing. To see our template checklist, please visit our Immigration Checklist: https://www.fickeymartinezlaw.com/immigration-checklist/
Common Questions:
Where can i confirm immigration fees.
USCIS Offers the following USCIS Immigration Fee Tool to assist in providing USCIS the proper filing fee: https://www.uscis.gov/feecalculator
Additionally, USCIS.gov also states the fee for each USCIS Form.
Where can I confirm the USCIS Mailing Address?
USCIS.gov is the ONLY place you should confirm/receive the USCIS Mailing Address.
Are the I-765 and I-131 free with an I-485?
Yes. The Employment Authorization and Advance Parole/Travel Document are free when filed with an I-485 Adjustment of Status Filing.
Do I need Passport Photos for the filing?
Yes, most Green Card related filings require passport-style photos, or they are highly recommended. When in doubt, add them to the filing.
Are Copies of Documents ok?
Yes, copies of all documents are acceptable, as long as the copy is a nice color scan. The only time to provide original documents is when they are specifically requested by USCIS, and when submitting Certified Copies of Court, Police, and Prison Records.
What type of documents should I attach with a filing?
Please check out our Immigration Checklist for general guidance based on our filing Case Type: https://www.fickeymartinezlaw.com/immigration-checklist/
