Interested in leveraging an AI book writer software tool?

In the midst of the AI and machine learning revolution, the market has been flooded with a multitude of writing software tools.

However, while there’s no shortage of AI tools claiming to aid in writing, not all are cut out for the intricate task of book authorship. Many might not produce the desired quality or simply aren’t tailored for the depth and narrative coherence required for books.

Among this vast sea of tools, a select few truly stand out. These exceptional AI book writer tools not only incorporate cutting-edge technology but also offer intuitive interfaces. They’re poised to redefine what it means to blend creativity and efficiency in authorship, ensuring content quality without compromising the essence of storytelling.

Capabilities to Look for in an AI Book Writer Software

Selecting the ideal AI book-writing software requires a keen understanding of its capabilities. To ensure the tool truly enhances your writing process, look for these essential features:

  • Customization and Control: Seek tools that offer robust customization options. The ability to dictate writing styles, tones, and themes is invaluable. It’s crucial that the AI’s output can be shaped to match your unique voice and creative intent.
  • Element Generation: Advanced AI tools can autonomously generate and store key elements of a book, such as characters, settings, and objects. This functionality aids in crafting a consistent and detailed narrative.
  • Scene Description Capabilities: An AI’s prowess in painting vivid scenes can be a boon. Ensure it can describe scenes using sensory details and even craft poetic metaphors to breathe life into your narrative.
  • Chapter Visualization: The ability to visualize and organize chapters can streamline the narrative process. This feature ensures the story flows smoothly and helps in tracking plot progression.
  • Research and Fact-Checking: The tool should be equipped to autonomously conduct research and fact-checking. This guarantees that the content created stands on a foundation of accuracy and credibility.
  • Intuitive User Interface: A user-friendly, intuitive interface can be the difference between seamless writing and frustrating hiccups. Opt for tools that are straightforward and easy to navigate.
  • Collaboration Capabilities: If your writing process involves teaming up with co-authors or editors, the tool should facilitate easy content sharing and editing. Collaborative features ensure seamless teamwork.

I am amazed at how easy this was to use

I was just wanting to try AI writing out of curiosity to see if it could create a readable blog post without too much input from myself. I managed to create a 1000 word post that flowed and read well and only had to make a couple of adjustments to the AI copy.

Excellent all-in-one media creation helper

I love the AI writing feature. This is the reason I purchased this software even though I already have other media creation helpers like Canva and InVideo. I've been exploring and experimenting with this feature and it is a great tool to help develop ideas and speed up writing for blogs and podcast content.

Dickens Honest

I was shocked to find out that, Simplified has several tools other than the AI Writing Assistant.

So far, I have used the long-form content generator and I am very pleased. I used it to write something that required a personal perspective about a topic and the AI performed very well. I am yet to see other features such as the product description and ads.

AI writing solutions + design = a unique and winning combination

What I like best about Simplified is the combination of AI-driven marketing solutions all in one place. Plenty of competitors offer AI writing, for example, but this is the first and only solution I've seen that offers both copy and design together.

The fact that Simplified simplifies everything into one tool - and for free - just makes this so much cooler!

Using AI To Write A Book: A Beginner’s Guide To Writing and Self-Publishing Your eBook

The thought of super-intelligent computers can be scary, but ethical AI involves using artificial intelligence as more of a co-pilot, or co-author in this case. See how writing a full novel and making an income online is possible for anyone with the help of an AI tool. And no, you don't have to be a writer to be successful.

Using AI To Write A Book: A Beginner’s Guide To Writing and Self-Publishing Your eBook

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is all the buzz these days, but it's still pretty misunderstood. The truth is we've been using AI in our daily lives for years. Auto-correct, Alexa, Siri...they're all powered by artificial intelligence. This has been a pattern for humanity. New technology like cameras and locomotive trains have always caused hot-button discussions and panic, but we wouldn't be where we are today as a society without them.

Hopefully, by the end of this article, you'll see why there's nothing to fear about using AI for writing and self-publishing your eBook. We'll address some of the most common concerns about using AI tools in the writing process and how to overcome them.

Note: If you want to use Ai to earn extra money on the side, then head over to our free webinar . We show you exactly how to use AI ethically to earn a passive income. You'll hear case studies of people from all over the world who are now making thousands (or even tens of thousands) of dollars per month without breaking their back or sacrificing all of their free time.

What Is Artificial Intelligence and What Does It Have to Do with Writing?

First, let's talk about what AI is and how it works. AI refers to computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, and problem-solving. In the context of writing, AI can assist you by generating ideas, suggesting edits, and even writing entire paragraphs or chapters. With the help of the right AI writing tool, you can streamline the writing process and produce high-quality content in a fraction of the time it would take to write everything manually.

How fast? Many AI Chatbots can generate text in minutes, right before your very eyes. This means you can generate entire books and write novels in days or weeks, unlike in the past, when authors would spend years writing their books or give up altogether.

Some other words you may hear in the AI space are natural language processing, machine learning, and large language models. Unless you're an engineer or developer, all you really need to know is that each AI system is built to be a helpful tool. Whether you want it to help you with writing articles or book writing, you're in charge.

Common Concerns and Ethical AI Writing

If you've been skeptical about AI systems, you're not alone. But just like any tool, there will always be people who use it in good and bad ways. Here are some of the most common concerns people have about AI tools (and what you can do about them):

One concern is the potential for plagiarism, as AI algorithms can generate content that closely resembles existing written content. This is easily avoidable by properly citing sources and using AI-generated content as a starting point rather than a finished product.

Another concern is the potential for bias in AI algorithms, which can lead to discriminatory or offensive content. At the end of the day, we control the inputs and what we do with the outputs. By carefully reviewing and editing AI-generated content, we can ensure that it aligns with our values and beliefs.

Taking Jobs

Another concern is the potential for AI to replace human workers. While AI can certainly make certain tasks more efficient, it cannot entirely replace the creativity and nuance that come with human writing and editing (among thousands of other jobs). AI is simply a tool to augment human work rather than replace it entirely.

At the end of the day, readers want books with value. Whether that value comes from AI writing, human writing, or a mix of both, the entire book should answer their questions and keep them engaged. Overall, the future of ethical AI and publishing is one that is constantly evolving, and it is up to all of us to ensure that it is used in a responsible and ethical manner. The point of using artificial intelligence in content creation and writing isn't to make a quick buck, it's to make our lives better.

We care deeply about ethical AI, and you should, too!

Planning Your eBook

Writing a book is no small feat, and planning is an essential step in the process. While it may seem daunting, modern tools have made it easier than ever. In our AIA Academy: Self-Publishing Course , we walk you through how to leverage AI tools to conduct thorough research and outline your book.

Here are some additional AI tools you can use to conduct research and outline your book without losing that key element of human creativity:

Brainstorming Book Ideas with AI

With AI, anyone can be an author, and writer's block is a thing of the past.Ā

Think about it: Five years ago, if you were experiencing writer's block, you would have to go for a walk, listen to a new podcast, or read a new book to get inspiration. Now, you can simply engage an AI chatbot in a conversation and produce dozens of ideas at the click of a button.

It's never been easier to plan out plot points or practice world-building as an author. There are several AI-powered tools available that can help you generate ideas based on your interests and niche. Some popular AI-powered tools for brainstorming include:

  • AnswerThePublic : This tool generates a list of questions and topics related to your subject.
  • ChatGPT : This tool generates unlimited ideas for any niche. The free version is decent, but the paid version is 10x more powerful.

Market Research with AI

Market research shows you if there's a demand for your topic, AKA whether your book idea can be profitable. AI can help you with this by analyzing search data and social media trends. This step is so important, our coaches always check our students' work before they spend all their time and energy taking their book ideas through the outline and manuscript process for an idea that won't generate any income for them.

Some popular AI-powered tools for market research include:

  • Google Trends : This tool shows you how popular a keyword is over time and in different regions.
  • ChatGPT: This tool generates customer profiles to help you better understand your potential audience.

Choosing a Title with AI

Once you have done your market research, it's time to choose a title for your eBook. AI can help you come up with a catchy and relevant title that makes people want to know more about and actually buy your book. You might be noticing a pattern here, but a great AI tool for title generation is:

  • ChatGPT: This tool generates unlimited title ideas optimized for each platform, such as Amazon's KDP.

Using AI to Write a Book

Writing an eBook is a great way to share your expertise or tell your story, and with AI writing software, it doesn't have to be complicated. Once you've got a rock-solid plan and outline, it's time to write a book! Here's how to make content creation as seamless as possible:

Crafting Your Content with AI

Once you've chosen your AI writing software, it's time to start crafting your content. AI can continue to help you generate ideas, create an outline, and even write entire sections of your eBook. The current AI systems aren't perfect and may require some editing and tweaking to get the final product just right, but more sophisticated large language models and AI software are being developed by the day. There's no telling what this tech will look like in the years to come.

When using AI to craft your content, consider the following:

  • Use specific prompts: The more specific your prompts, the better the AI will be at generating relevant content and writing in the style you'd like.
  • Stay on topic: AI can sometimes generate content that is off-topic or irrelevant, so make sure to keep your prompts focused.
  • Fact-check: Don't rely solely on AI-generated content. Take the time to fact-check everything.

Whether you're using artificial intelligence to help you out with the whole book or just to get some words down on the page for your first draft, fiction and non-fiction writers alike can benefit from trying out new ideas.

Prompting, like any skill, takes practice. By using AI over time, you'll become more and more familiar with what works (and what doesn't).

Proofreading and Editing with AI

AI doesn't just write content for you, it can also help you edit your eBook and ensure that it's ready for publishing. AI can be a great tool for proofreading, catching spelling errors, and suggesting improvements you may have missed, such as changing your sentence structure for clarity. One of our favorite AI hacks is asking the system to re-write a paragraph with a different tone and writing style, i.e., playful, silly, serious, academic, etc.

A few AI tools for proofreading and editing include:

  • Grammarly : This tool uses AI to catch grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. It also has a plagiarism checker that scans the internet for potentially stolen content and a style guide feature that allows you to format citations properly.
  • Hemingway Editor : Hemingway Editor uses AI to analyze your writing and suggest improvements for clarity and readability.
  • ProWritingAid : This tool uses AI to analyze your writing for grammar, style, and readability.

Designing Your eBook

Once you've written your eBook, it's time to design it. This is where you can use AI to create professional and visually appealing images for both the inside and outside of your book.

Cover Design using AI

Your cover is the first thing that readers will see, so it's important to make it stand out. AI can help you create a unique and eye-catching cover design. There are many AI-powered tools available that can generate a cover design based on your book's genre, title, and author name. These tools analyze thousands of existing book covers to come up with a design that is both visually appealing and relevant to your book but, more importantly, still unique.

Our favorite AI tool for cover design is currently MidJourney .

Interior Design using AI

Interior design is just as important as the cover design, though it's often overlooked. You might consider using AI tools to generate photographs, graphs, and charts to add a personal touch to each of your chapters. Many readers appreciate visual aids throughout the entire book.

Publishing Your eBook

Once you have finished writing your eBook with the help of AI, it's time to publish it. Self-publishing is a great way to get your work out there and reach a wider audience. There are several platforms you can use to publish your eBook, including Amazon KDP, Apple Books, and Barnes & Noble Press. By now, the hard part is over, and you're just a few clicks away from sharing your stories with the world.

Formatting Your eBook

Formatting your eBook is an important step in preparing it for publication. You can use software like Reedsy to format your eBook. With Reedsy, you can choose from a range of templates, customize your eBook's layout, and add images and graphics to your eBook to make it ready to publish. They also have options for adding an author bio, a dedication page, and various outline styles for the Table of Contents.

Formatting can be frustrating because Amazon KDP only allows certain file formats to be uploaded, but tools like Reedsy generate text files that are 100% ready for publication, making it super simple.

Publishing on Amazon KDP

Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) is one of the most popular platforms for self-publishing eBooks. It allows you to publish your eBook on the Amazon Kindle store, where millions of readers can discover and purchase your work.

With such a vast audience at your fingertips, It’s worth giving Amazon publishing a try .

To publish your eBook on Amazon KDP, you will need to create an account and follow the steps provided. You will need to provide details such as the title, author name, description, and cover image.Ā

How to Use AI to Write an eBook

Does Amazon KDP Allow Content Written by AI?

Many publishing platforms are receptive to the evolving role of AI in the publishing industry –including Amazon. Yes, Amazon KDP allows eBooks created with AI technology as long as the writer abides by their content guidelines. This means that the eBook must not contain offensive or illegal content, and it must not violate any copyright laws.

They will ask you whether you used AI-generated or AI-assisted content before you click the final "publish" button, but this is just so they can conduct research on their end. It will not affect whether or not your book is accepted on the platform.

Ultimately, what they care about most is that your eBook is relevant to the audience that will read it. Poorly written or low-quality content can result in negative reviews and low sales or even the closure of the account in extreme cases.

Note: This is a lot of information. If you'd like to see a step-by-step breakdown of our proven formula for success, join our free webinar ! You'll meet people from all over the world who have gotten more income, more free time, and more fulfillment directly from publishing online.

Marketing Your eBook with the Help of AI

Once you've written and self-published your eBook, it's time to market your book on Amazon . With the help of AI, you can better understand your target audience, promote your eBook on social media, and improve your SEO.

Using AI to Better Understand Your Target Audience

One of the biggest challenges of marketing your eBook is understanding your target audience. With AI, you can analyze data to better understand your audience's interests, demographics, and behavior. This can help you tailor your marketing efforts to reach your ideal readers.

AI-powered tools like Jasper's Audience Insights can help you gather data on your audience. You can use this data to create targeted ads, email campaigns, and social media posts that resonate with your audience.

Using AI to Help with Social Media Promotion

Social media is a powerful tool for promoting your eBook. But with so many platforms and users, it can be overwhelming to manage your social media presence. AI-powered tools like Hootsuite and Buffer can help you manage your social media accounts and schedule posts in advance. AI-powered tools can also help you analyze your social media performance and optimize your strategy as you go.Ā

Using AI to Find Keywords for SEO

Search engine optimization is crucial for getting your eBook in front of your target audience. One of the key elements of SEO is using the right keywords. With AI-powered tools, you can find the best keywords to use in your eBook's title, description, and content so it shows up when people are searching for it across Google, Amazon, etc.

Tools like SEMrush and Ahrefs analyze search data to find the most popular and relevant keywords for your niche.

The Future of Ethical AI and Publishing

Hopefully, by now, it's clear that an AI chatbot can be just the co-pilot you need to make the process of writing a book as quick and painless as possible. Whether you use it to overcome writer's block or analyze your own writing for areas of growth, AI isn't the future. It's already here now.

There are companies out there that are using AI for all the wrong reasons and will suggest that you publish as many books as humanly possible to squeeze out as much money as possible. The Publishing.com team doesn't roll that way.

We do teach you how to write books, and we'll even show you our favorite AI writing tool, but we teach you how to infuse quality throughout the entire book process, from the idea and book outline to publishing and marketing.

9 Best AI Writing Tools: Amazing Options For Fiction and Nonfiction

There are a lot of AI tools out there, but only a select few that are work for authors of books, whether that be fiction or nonfiction.

At least, there aren’t many that are genuinely good.

Writing with AI continues to be a controversial subject, but that’s not what this article is about. This article assumes you are interested in using AI as a writing tool at some point in your process, whether that be brainstorming, research, character building, outlining, editing, or even writing the first draft.

Most authors probably don’t enjoy at least one of the items on that list. And AI can reduce the friction in that process.

If you don’t want to write with AI, that’s totally fine. But if you are at least curious, we present to you the best AI writing software that you can use for writing fiction and nonfiction.

  • The best tools for fiction
  • The best tools for nonfiction
  • Why each tool is important
  • Which tool we recommend most for authors

Table of contents

  • 1. Sudowrite
  • 3. ChatGPT Plus
  • 4. OpenAI Playground
  • The Bottom Line: Which AI Writing Tool Is Best for Fiction?
  • 1. ChatGPT/OpenAI Playground (Best Budget/My Recommendation)
  • 2. Jasper (Most Powerful)
  • 3. Copy AI (Best User Interface)
  • 4. WriteSonic (Best for Marketing Copy)
  • 5. Frase IO (Best for SEO)
  • The Bottom Line: Which AI Writing Tool is Best for Nonfiction
  • Honorable Mentions

I've put together a list of prompts that you can use for just that purpose!

What Are the 5 Best AI Writing Tools for Fiction?

I’ve created a list of 4 tools that I believe are the best for fiction authors. They are, in order of recommendation:

  • ChatGPT Plus
  • OpenAI Playground

Additionally, I created a video explaining all of the different tools for writing fiction with AI that you can watch here (this is a personal project, not directly associated with Kindlepreneur, and posted here with permission):

If you want more videos like this talking about the practical uses of AI in writing and marketing, be sure to  subscribe to the channel .

Pricing: $19/month for 30,000 AI words, $29/month for 90,000 words, or $129/month for 300,000 AI words. The $29/month tier is recommended.

  • Comprehensive feature set
  • Designed with fiction writers in mind
  • Excellent tools for revisions and first drafts
  • Ideal for brainstorming sessions
  • No limitations on content
  • Potentially overwhelming number of features
  • Suboptimal design for some features
  • Highest price on this list (though still lower than many other AI tools in the market)

The AI writing tool called Sudowrite is a tool that's gained a lot of traction among fiction writers. It's packed with features designed to help authors throughout their storytelling process. These features include writing, revision, and brainstorming tools that cater to various aspects of crafting a story. It's pretty impressive, despite having some flaws.

One thing that sets Sudowrite apart from other tools like ChatGPT is that it doesn't impose any content restrictions. So, if you're into writing erotic romance, gratuitous violence, or gore, this is almost certainly the tool you’ll want to use.

Although it has its drawbacks, like an overwhelming interface, Sudowrite remains a top choice for many fiction authors.

So, if you're looking for a writing tool specifically built for fiction, Sudowrite could be your best bet. I don't personally use it as my go-to tool for brainstorming, worldbuilding, character building, outlining, etc., but I do use it for writing actual prose.

And with our link (affiliate), you can get 10,000 words to try it out for yourself, which should be enough to see if it’s right for you. Give it a try and see if it works!

Pricing: Free

  • Exceptional quality of prose
  • Can accept and read books up to 75,000 words in length with a massive context window
  • Good for marketing materials as well
  • Often doesn't follow directions as well as ChatGPT

Claude is a little newer than ChatGPT, but it has quickly become one of the most important tools for AI fiction writers.

It's not perfect, and part of me really wishes there was a good hybrid of Claude's language with ChatGPT's ability to follow orders, but it's still an exceptional AI large language model.

It's biggest strength is its prose. The prose is better with Claude than with any other model, especially if you are writing fiction. It doesn't have the same level of flowery language you usually get from GPT-4.

Additionally, it has a 100K token limit, which makes it really good for analyzing your current novel, generating marketing material, creating a wiki, having lengthy instructions, etc.

Where it's not perfect is in its ability to follow orders. If I'm giving it a summary of what I would like it to write in a chapter, for example, it can sometimes get derailed by the time it gets to the end of the story.

ChatGPT seems to have the advantage here, as it is much better at following orders and dealing with anything that requires structure.

But that said, Claude is still my #2 recommendation for fiction authors.

Pricing: $20/month

  • Virtually limitless word count
  • Endless customization options
  • Ideal for idea generation and outlining
  • Necessitates mastering the art of effective prompting
  • Inability to modify the generated responses

When it comes to AI writing tools, cost and word count limitations can put a damper on creativity, as is the case with Sudowrite and OpenAI's Playground. In contrast, ChatGPT provides flexibility and versatility, enabling writers to experiment and create without worrying about exceeding word count or incurring additional costs. This freedom allows authors to focus on their writing and push their creative boundaries.

However, to truly harness the power of ChatGPT, it is essential to master prompt engineering. Crafting the right prompts can unlock the tool's potential and lead to more effective and personalized results.

While Sudowrite and Verb are arguably more user-friendly, their creative potential may be somewhat limited compared to ChatGPT, as they provide a more structured and guided experience, as opposed to the open-endedness of ChatGPT.

It's worth noting that ChatGPT does have content restrictions, making it less suitable for authors who write erotica or incorporate excessive violence into their stories. In such cases, Sudowrite or Verb may be more appropriate alternatives, as they do not impose these limitations.

Nevertheless, despite these content restrictions, ChatGPT remains a preferred tool for many fiction writers, thanks to its versatility and adaptability.

Pricing: Depends on the chosen model, with a pay-as-you-go pricing structure.

  • Offers all features of ChatGPT
  • Highly flexible
  • Affordable for many users
  • Allows editing of previous responses
  • Pay-as-you-go pricing model

OpenAI Playground and ChatGPT Plus share a close resemblance, as they are essentially built on the same foundation. However, there are some key differences between these two AI writing tools that make each more appealing to different types of users.

One notable advantage of Playground is its ability to edit past responses, giving authors more control over their generated text. Nevertheless, there's a limit to how much memory it can retain, so users may need to delete past responses if they reach that threshold.

The pay-as-you-go model of Playground presents another challenge, as it can potentially hinder creativity and experimentation. Since users have to pay for each word the tool generates, there may be a reluctance to try new approaches or iterate extensively on the text. This constraint contrasts with ChatGPT's pricing model, which allows for more freedom in usage.

In addition, the cost of using Playground increases with every word it needs to remember, as processing power is required to analyze and store that information. While this might not be a major concern for infrequent AI users, who may find the tool affordable for their needs, it could pose a financial burden for those who rely heavily on AI assistance in their writing projects.

Despite these drawbacks, OpenAI Playground remains a close candidate for best AI writing program for authors. However, ChatGPT's pricing structure, which offers greater freedom and predictability in terms of cost, ultimately makes it the preferred choice for many authors. The decision between these two tools will largely depend on individual preferences and priorities, such as the importance of editing past responses versus the impact of cost constraints on creativity.

Pricing: Free during open beta

  • Minimalist user interface
  • Streamlined approach to writing
  • Recognizes and understands characters
  • Analyzes manuscripts for improvement
  • Limited features compared to competitors
  • Lacks capability to generate entire scenes at once

Verb.ai is an AI writing tool that caters to discovery writers with its minimalist design and linear approach. By generating smaller chunks of text (100-200 words), the tool may help authors maintain creativity and stay focused on their writing. However, this aspect might not be ideal for writers who prefer to work with longer scenes or those who follow a non-linear writing process.

One of the standout features of Verb.ai is its character database, which ensures consistency in character interactions, dialogue, and actions throughout the text.

In addition, Verb.ai has the ability to analyze manuscripts and compare them to best-selling books, providing valuable insights for improvement and helping authors elevate their writing.

It's important to note that, as a relatively new tool, Verb.ai offers fewer features than some of its counterparts, such as Sudowrite. However, as the tool is currently in open beta and available for free, there's no harm in trying it out to see if it aligns with one's writing style and preferences.

Ultimately, the choice between Verb.ai and other AI writing tools like Sudowrite will depend on individual writing style preferences and requirements. For discovery writers who appreciate a minimalist design and linear approach, Verb.ai could be a highly viable option.

I recommend a combonation of Sudowrite with a chatbot like Claude or ChatGPT as a suplement (though if I had to pick one, I'd only be Claude). The chatbots are going to be better than Sudowrite on:

  • Brainstorming
  • Character building
  • Various editing tasks

Additionally, ChatGPT Plus and Claude give you, essentially, unlimited words to use, meaning you don’t have to hold yourself back when running through iterations and ideas.

That said, every item on this list is good for one reason or another. Verb is better at getting into a linear flow, Sudowrite is the best at generating actual prose, and OpenAI has almost everything ChatGPT has, with a few differences.

Personally, I use a combination of ChatGPT or Claude for most things, and Sudowrite for the prose of my first drafts.

What Are the 5 Best AI Writing Tools for Nonfiction?

Nonfiction-based AI writing tools are everywhere these days. And it can be really hard to sort through the ocean of new tools popping up every day.

That’s why I’ve narrowed them down to the top 5 that I recommend for most authors of nonfiction:

  • ChatGPT/OpenAI Playground

Pricing: $20/month for ChatGPT Plus, pay as you go with OpenAI Playground

  • Very good at nonfiction
  • Does not connect to the Internet

Both ChatGPT and the OpenAI Playground, much as is the case with fiction, is one of the best tools for nonfiction as well.

Firstly, it is one of the most inexpensive tools on the market, due to the fact that OpenAI is not dealing with any middlemen like most other tools do.

Additionally, ChatGPT and OpenAI playground are very open ended, meaning you can produce almost any result that you can think of, as long as you have an effective prompt.

This is something not available in most other tools.

ChatGPT also seems to be better suited for nonfiction than for fiction, as this seems to be the large bulk of material that it was trained on. So despite the fact that we still recommend ChatGPT for fiction, it is even better for nonfiction.

I personally love the price point for the value that he gives. For $20 a month, ChatGPT plus gives you essentially, unlimited words. That, combined with the high quality, makes this my top recommendation for nonfiction authors, just at his it is my top recommendation for certain aspects of the fiction writing process.

Pricing: Sliding scale starting at $29/month, but $99/month for boss mode and 100,000 words, which is the minimum of what you will want.

  • Excellent selection of templates
  • Relatively easy to use
  • One of the best long-form writers out there
  • Extremely expensive
  • Output is unpredictable
  • Can be overwhelming to learn

Now, despite everything I just said about ChatGPT, one of the most powerful tools on the market is Jasper.

Jasper has been on the scene for a long time, long before ChatGPT blew up in popularity. They use OpenAI's GPT-4 model, but also combine it with multiple other AI models to make a far more robust system.

Jasper also comes with multiple templates, which are like recipes for whatever it is you want to produce, whether that be marketing copy, a blog post, email headlines, etc. Chances are, Jasper has a template for your needs.

The downside to Jasper is primarily the price point. It is one of the most expensive tools on the market. This is compounded by the fact that most features worth having are only available on ā€œboss modeā€ which is a more expensive plan.

But if price is not an obstacle, it is definitely one you might want to look at, as it does have a few advantages over even ChatGPT.

But for most nonfiction authors, I'm not sure the benefits outweigh the cost.

Pricing : $35/month for unlimited credits and projects

  • A lot of great templates
  • Good, clean design
  • Good at editing text
  • Not as good of output as ChatGPT or Jasper
  • Not great for long-form

Copy AI is a close competitor of Jasper’s, and many would call it equal in power. It has one particular advantage over Jasper, and that is its design. The overall flow of writing and software designed is one of the best in the industry.

Like Jasper, Copy AI has multiple templates that you can use, and utilizes some of the same AI models that Jasper another tools use. In fact, it is not all that different from many other AI tools.

Unlike some tools, it does have a few unique options like a grammar checker, a sentence simple fire, and a verb booster, which are all useful in the writing process. In fact, Copy AI is a really good option for those who want to improve their writing in the editing stage.

It's also priced far more reasonably than Jasper. This is the one we recommend if you want something cheaper than Jasper with similar output.

Pricing : $15/month for 50,000 words, $25/month for 375,000 words, $45/month for unlimited words

  • Great for short-form social/marketing copy
  • Has a long-form assistant
  • Not the cleanest output
  • Not great for longer content
  • Not the best layout

WriteSonic is another great AI tool that specializes in marketing copy. If you write a lot of marketing copy for your your job or in your author business, this might be one to look at.

For example, they have templates for a variety of purposes, anything from ad copy for Facebook, to an Instagram description, to the text of a LinkedIn profile. If it's social media or marketing related, they probably have a template for it.

The downsides that I found when working with WriteSonic are mostly due to the interface, which is not as clean as copy AI or Jasper. And while it does have a longform assistant for writing longer articles or books, I found it to be less than ideal compared to Jasper or ChatGPT.

So if you have the specific need around marketing, this is want to look at, otherwise I would use a different option.

Pricing : $14.99/month for 1 article/week, $44.99/month for 30 articles/month, $114.99/month for Unlimited articles. All three plans give you 4000 AI words per month.

  • Great for SEO research
  • All-in-one content creation
  • Amazing optimization features
  • Clumsy interface
  • Tries to do too much

Frase IO is a little bit different, because it is not primarily a writing program. Instead, Frase IO is a program to help Internet marketers with Seo.

As someone who does a lot of Seo writing himself, I highly appreciate this. Frase IO will scan the top search results of Google, and give you an AI -assisted analysis of those top results. This helps you identify topics that you should discuss in your article, makes sure you have all the right keywords you need, that your article is long enough, etc.

Frase IO is not the first software tool to do this, but it is one of the most effective because of its use of AI.

And while AI writing is not its focus, it does have some AI writing capabilities to help optimize an article.

Overall, this is a solid tool for Internet marketers, especially if you write content for websites that you want to rank on Google. It's just not going to do the writing for you.

For most authors of nonfiction, my primary recommendation will be ChatGPT Plus, as it is the most flexible, and the most affordable. For the average author, there is little to be gained by one or more of the other programs.

That said, someone who writes a lot with AI might consider Jasper, and WriteSonic and Frase IO are great additions for marketing copy and SEO optimization, respectively. But if you don’t have these special needs, ChatGPT is absolutely fine to be getting on with.

Book Marketing Made Simple

Over 47,000+ authors, NYT bestsellers, and publishing companies use Publisher Rocket to gain key insight to the market.  Help your book now

In addition to the above, there are a few other AI programs that I should mention. None of these are that much worse, honestly, because most use the same models as the others (usually GPT 3.5/4). But for one reason or another, they didn’t really excel or rise to the top.

  • Rytr : Rytr is an affordable and compact AI writing software that supports multiple languages, has features such as document editing, GPT-3 integration, over 30 use cases, and SEMRush integration, although it may be confusing at first and not as visually appealing as competitors. It’s a great budget option, but seems unnecessary when compared to the price of ChatGPT Plus.
  • ContentBox.AI : ContentBox AI offers basic tools for AI content generation and great content optimization tools with over 12 templates, browser extensions, and multi-language support, although it is a bit pricey compared to the market average.
  • GrowthBar : GrowthBar is an AI assistant focused on SEO with keyword and competitor research tools, content optimization tools, and an AI writing tool, all with an intuitive interface and affordable pricing, although its SEO features are barebones and the AI writing tool can be a hit or miss.
  • Article Forge : Article Forge is an affordable AI writing tool with a comprehensive tool stack for bulk content generation, innovative features to improve editing workflow, multi-language support, and SEO integrations, although the AI content is not always top-notch and it can take a while to generate content.
  • PepperType AI : PepperType AI is a simple and lightweight AI writing tool that is focused on speed in content delivery with over 30 templates, quick AI content generation, a simple process for AI writing, and a straightforward interface, although it lacks special features and its grammar is not top-notch.
  • Anyword : Anyword is an AI writing software with a focus on engaging the target audience, featuring special tools for audience engagement, but with a high price tag.
  • Outranking.io : Outranking.io is an AI writing tool that focuses on a data-driven approach and includes features like topic and keyword research, content optimization, and AI writing assistance, although its AI writing function is not the best, and its interface can get cluttered.
  • Longshot AI : Longshot AI is an AI writing tool that focuses on fact-checking and has research capabilities, along with a robust AI writing system, but has limited interface customization and style and tone options.
  • Lyne AI : Lyne AI is an outreach tool that generates AI content for outreach messages and ice breakers, with advanced research and LinkedIn integration, however, it can be hard to get started with and has no customization options for content output.
  • Nyle AI : Nyle AI is an AI writing tool built for eCommerce businesses, featuring a variety of tools, templates, and AI-generated content, although it can be challenging for beginners and limited in style and tone options.

There are TONS of AI tools out there, and more are cropping up every day. Keep checking back to this article to see any updates, as this market is shifting constantly, and more AI tools are likely to rise and fall in the future. And if you're into AI, don't forget to check out our article on AI art for authors as well.

Can AI Really Write My Book? The Pros + Cons of Using AI For Book Writing

Open AI Chat GPT. Explore the pros and cons of using AI for book writing with Publish Your Purpose. Photo: Jonathan Kemper

Back in the day, writers used to write books with a quill. Then came the pen, then the pencil, then the typewriter, then the computer, and now … artificial intelligence (AI)? As writers, it’s normal to have a lot of questions as AI, mainly ChatGPT , comes to the forefront of our writer minds. Can AI write books? Should I use AI to write my book? What about some of my book? What are the larger implications of using AI to write for me? As a hybrid publisher, we have thoughts. Keep reading to learn the pros and cons of using AI for book writing .

Our Stance on Using AI for Book WritingĀ

Before we delve into the pros and cons of using AI for book writing , we want to be clear about our stance as a publisher. Publish Your Purpose is a hybrid publisher of nonfiction books that seek to make a difference in the world. We empower thought leaders, professionals, and visionaries to write books to spread their ideas to others. Writing a book is a challenging, yet rewarding, process—and we believe in that process. Using AI to cut corners, in our view, only cheats the writer of the full experience of being an author, and as we’ll outline in our ā€œconsā€ section, poses risks for future copyright infringement that we can’t predict at this time.

For this reason, we do not accept manuscripts that have been written with the help of AI. If you wrote it yourself, submit your manuscript here .Ā

Yet, as you’ll see (when you keep reading), there are instances where using ChatGPT can be immensely helpful for other tasks, including producing promotional material for your book, and regular social media content, especially if you are working on a tight budget and deadline. So, let’s delve into these pros and cons.Ā

Where AI Is Right Now

AI is rapidly improving, so we don’t blame you if you aren’t up to speed on its current capabilities. To help you better understand this article, here’s a quick summary of AI right now: ChatGPT is a language processing tool created by OpenAI that can help users with a wide variety of tasks from writing essays to creating code. The newest version of ChatGPT (GPT-4) is highly intelligent; it was able to pass the bar exam in the 90th percentile . It’s not the only AI development that’s getting buzz right now— Microsoft released their AI-powered integration with the search engine Bing , which uses an upgraded version of ChatGPT, and Google launched a competitor called Bard . AI is officially being integrated into the way we search, communicate, and do business.

Can AI Write Books?

The short answer: Yes, they can. AI has advanced to a degree that allows it to create readable, passable content that with the right prompts can be used to write a full-length book. The question becomes: Should I use AI to write my book? We don’t think you should, but here are the pros and cons.

Pros of Using AI for Book Writing

Useful for supplementary materials.

There are certain scenarios where ChatGPT can significantly cut down the time and costs it requires to market your book. Let’s say you wrote your book (on your own, or by hiring a human ghostwriter), and are ready to publish it. To promote your book, you will need a solid book description, and you might need daily Instagram posts to keep up engagement with your audience before the launch date. This can be time-consuming and expensive. But, with a few well-designed prompts in ChatGPT, you could have this content fairly quickly.Ā

Cuts Audiobook Production Costs

If you want to turn your book into an audiobook down the line, AI might be able to significantly speed up the process. AI voice learning has improved a lot since the robotic Siri voices first appeared on our iPhones. Now the cadence, rhythm, and natural pauses of AI voices are getting scary good (think: Her , the movie). At some point soon, authors will be able to just send their manuscript over to an AI system to convert it into audiobook form.Ā

But… voice acting (like writing a book) is an art form. So, this brings up a whole other can of worms. Do we want AI to be replacing human creative expression? AI can help automate certain tasks, but should we draw the line at art itself? Something to think about…

What are your thoughts on AI and creativity? Leave us a note , we want to know!

Idea Generation

Speak to anyone who has written a book and they’ll tell you that writer’s block kills. Hours staring at blank screens, tears falling onto keyboards, desperate screams into the abyss. Theoretically, AI solves this. If you’re able to come up with an idea but unable to think of what to write next, you can write a prompt into ChatGPT and it can help you get started. Maybe you won’t use verbatim what ChatGPT produces, but you’ll be inspired by something they write, and it might spark another idea from you.Ā

Organization

Let’s say you have a ton of ideas and writer’s block isn’t affecting you, but you’re struggling to organize it all. ChatGPT can help you find a flow between all of your ideas. Again, this is tricky because that’s also something a talented (human) editor can help you with. But if you’re on a really quick turnaround, or in a pickle, you might be able to get some quick relief from AI.

Cons of Using AI for Book Writing

Big risk of plagiarism.

The biggest concern for using AI for book writing is the risk of plagiarism. Right now, ChatGPT pulls source material from the internet at large to generate a response, but there’s no real way to know exactly where the source material comes from. So, if you ask ChatGPT to write a book chapter, it’s pulling information to write it, but we can’t find out from where. This poses a huge copyright problem because we can’t find out who owns the copyright of the material that was used to write the content. There are already some lawsuits happening as I write this (yes, me, a human) that are figuring out the complex copyright rules of AI writing.

It’s The Wild West Out There

Another big problem is that no one’s going to know what the repercussions of using AI for book writing will be until years down the road. You might be able to get your book together fine now, but once it’s time to publish it, publishing markets like Amazon or Barnes and Noble might come up with an AI flagging system that prevents it from hitting shelves.

An Example of Flagging by Amazon

We have a related example: In 2017, in one of the first books we published, we had an excerpt from a letter that we thought was in the public domain. We had properly sourced it, but when we went to load the book into Amazon directly, Amazon flagged it as a misuse of content, because it was pulled directly word for word and exceeded a character limit we weren’t aware of. So, on launch day Amazon suppressed our title.Ā

Could this happen with AI-generated content? Do you want to risk inadvertently plagiarizing someone else’s work and truly having no idea? Even if you modify the text that ChatGPT generates for you, there’s still that risk that it is too close to the source material and shouldn’t be used. And there just isn’t any reasonable way for authors at this phase of AI to know how to protect themselves from a legal standpoint. The last thing you want to do is get yourself sued because you’re using improper information.Ā

Your Writing Could Be Used Without Permission or Credit

You also need to keep in mind that when you post something inside of ChatGPT to generate content, that then becomes a part of their ecosystem of content that can be used to make future content. So, for example, if you upload your entire manuscript into ChatGPT and ask them to write a book summary, your book can then be used to answer other users’ questions! And you won’t get credited.Ā

Duplicate Content

What if two people type the same prompt into ChatGPT and both use and publish the content? Would this show up as duplicate content on Google, and would your content be flagged for SEO and penalized? Who is the copyright owner of that work? Because there’s so much we don’t know about AI, it’s a good idea to proceed cautiously.Ā

A Case For Human Art

AI is a tool, and in certain cases, a very useful one. It can be used to help you apply for jobs more easily, it can help you get out of writer’s block by helping you spark new ideas, and yes, it can write an entire book for you.Ā

But, should you use AI to write your book? We don’t think you should.Ā

It’s helpful to take a step back and think about why you are writing a book in the first place. Part of what makes books so powerful is their uniqueness: Two people can’t write the same book, because they have different life experiences, different writing styles, and are complex human beings. Two AI can write the same book, and if we all use AI to write our books, the world of books—the quality and uniqueness, the thing that makes it art —will suffer.Ā

And no, we did not use AI to help us write this article. But yes, we thought about it. It’s always there—and yes, it’s tempting.Ā

If you’d like a tool that isn’t afraid to work with you to reach your writing goals, try Jasper, an AI writing assistant with a difference. Here are three ways Jasper can help you write your book:

Creating an outline

Writing long-form content

Jasper’s Long-form Assistant was made for long-form content. It works with you to create content from scratch — even if it’s an entire book.Ā

All you need to do is provide some information about your book and then it’ll write the first 100 or so words before passing the baton back to you. Then you write a few more words and it continues for you. If you need help figuring out the Long-form Assistant, check out the Jasper Bootcamp .

Jarvis Bootcamp

As you can see in the screenshot above, Bootcamp tutorials teach you how Jasper thinks and how you can get the best out of the AI. Jasper also has a Boss Mode plan that allows you to give the AI direct instructions for writing your content.

Polishing your sentences

One more thing every writer needs? Sentences that bring your story to life . Jasper can help you express your thoughts perfectly by tweaking sentences with a specific goal.Ā

The sentence rewriting templates are the Explain It to a Child, Content Improver, Text Summarizer, and Sentence Expander templates. They help simplify, paraphrase, summarize, and expand specific sentences or paragraphs as needed.

7 Epic AI Fiction Book Writing Software Tools In 2023

Imagine if your next novel could be publish-ready 10x faster! Instead of taking three long years of everyday writing, it would only take 3 to 4 months from start to end. This is totally possible in 2023 when you have a good AI book-writing software tool acting as your most devoted brainstorming partner!

The AI revolution has extended its reach into the realm of literature, and it’s here to be your collaborator, not your competitor.

You might think that artificial intelligence is mostly used in business , but with the enormous progress boost that the tech market encountered thanks to the explosive interest in ChatGPT, AI in book writing is no more a thing of the future.

In fact, there are already some cases of fictional books published with heavy AI assistance, such as “Death of an Author” by Stephen Marche. The book was called “an exciting read” and “the best example yet of the great writing that can be done with an LLM like ChatGPT” in a book review on Wired .

In this article, we’ll explore the top 10 epic AI fiction book writing software tools of 2023 that are redefining the boundaries of storytelling. We’ll look at how you can step up your book-writing skills with AI’s help and dig into what AI tools can do for you besides the writing itself.

This guide is for fiction book writers, novelists, and editors. If you need to create an ebook freebie or a non-fiction book, you might want to look at my list of the best ebook generators instead.

Can AI write good fiction?

Artificial intelligence can potentially write good-quality fiction books, but only if you give it proper guidance every step of the way. While AI can generate ideas and string together words, the heart of the story – its soul and essence – still comes from the human author.

AI tools for book writing are designed to supercharge your creativity, assisting you in everything from character development to plot creation, all while ensuring your unique voice and style remain the focal point.

In a way, it’s akin to having a co-author who never sleeps and is always ready to provide a fresh twist or an unexpected subplot, while still supporting and enhancing your every idea. With an AI writing tool at your service, you can forget about writer’s block and never stare at a blank page again!

What makes a good AI fiction book writing tool?

So, what does it take for an AI book writing software to claim the title of “the best”?

It’s a complex recipe, blending innovative technology with intuitive design, all the while ensuring it becomes a seamless extension of your creative process.

As I’m writing this, there are 5k+ AI tools already available on the market , a considerable chunk of which are AI writers. And hundreds more are launched every month. But, to be honest, many of them aren’t good quality and certainly aren’t usable for fiction writing.

Most AI writing tools are created with marketing goals in mind , and even those that excel at social media post creation or long-form website content generation, are subpar when it comes to writing a book.

A modern blog article has nothing in common with a fiction book (well, maybe a few words). For the latter, you need compelling characters, a well-crafted plot, immersive storytelling, an engaging flow, and a satisfying resolution that makes sense.

The best AI tool for fiction writers is not a general AI writer that can write everything on earth. The best tool is the one that is designed with novel writing in mind and trained on actual examples of good fiction and not just news content from the internet.

And this is exactly what’s on our list today.

Confronted with the all-too-familiar blinking cursor? ShortlyAI’s ‘Write for me’ button is your immediate escape route. One click – and the tool continues in your own voice, helping you move forward whenever you get stuck.

It interprets the text that appears before the cursor, including any titles or background information, to produce context-aware and voice-consistent prose.

But it’s not just the technology that’s cutting-edge. The interface has been thoughtfully designed to encourage creative flow. It feels like a blank canvas, uncluttered and distraction-free, with a sidebar containing all the tools you need.

Best Features of Shortly

  • “Write for me” button to continue your thought
  • “Rewrite” feature for unique wording
  • Quickly “shorten” or “expand” as necessary
  • “Instruct” the AI writer with detailed guidance
  • Handy ++ and – – commands to use or avoid specific words

Unlike many other AI fiction writing generators, Shortly AI doesn’t have a credit system. There is a single plan that gives you unlimited access to the AI fiction writing assistant for $79 per month.

If you choose to pay annually, you get a sweet discount, resulting in 2 free months.

To test Shortly AI for free before committing on a monthly basis, you can take advantage of their free trial. To get a ShortlyAI free trial, simply go to the ShortlyAI website , enter your email, and press Try it now .

This incredible tool is a true writing powerhouse! It takes on a wide range of writing challenges, helping you navigate everything from plot holes to the tiniest dialogue details. The way it enhances plot cohesion and develops characters is something I haven’t seen before.

I especially like the handy ‘///’ feature: you can use this sign to mark a “clean slate” for the AI in case it gets stuck in unwanted patterns.

As a single writer, you’ll probably never need more than the Saver plan (only $9/month) – it can generate up to 100k characters and 20 images every month, which is probably enough for writing a fiction book.

The Unlimited plan costs $29/month, gives you unlimited access to the AI writing tool, and only limits you to 100 images per month.

While Rytr will not write the whole book with you like Sudowrite or Shortly AI would, it is still a good fiction writing assistant. It can help you generate story plots, come up with fresh ideas, generate AI images to complement your storyline, expand or shorten your text, or even write a unique poem!

7. Character.ai

Best ai tool for writing book characters.

Character AI is advanced AI software designed for writers, game developers, and creatives who want to breathe life into their characters.

With a focus on dynamic character development, the platform provides an arsenal of features that make it a one-stop solution for generating rich and believable personalities for any narrative.

One great use for the platform is to create a specific character that is part of your book and interact with it through the chat.

This will help you better understand the behavior and motives behind your character’s actions and even come up with more realistic dialog lines. This tool is especially useful for villains or other characters who are nothing like you and have to think differently.

At the heart of Character.AI are specialized algorithms that assist in crafting multi-dimensional characters. The AI tool offers a host of attributes to choose from, allowing you to define characters’ appearances, traits, motivations, and even their backstories. This way, you’re not just creating characters; you’re building complex individuals that will engage and captivate your audience in a relatable way.

Character.ai is currently in beta and free to use, so go play with it while you can! I suspect they’ll introduce some kind of a paid subscription plan as soon as they are out of beta.

Your AI book is written: What’s next?

Let’s imagine that you already found the best AI book writing tool and finally finished the first draft. Congratulations! However, your journey doesn’t end here.

Your draft is a diamond in the rough, and now it’s time to refine it, make it pretty, and spread the word so people all over the world will actually read and enjoy it. That’s the end game, isn’t it?

Here are the next steps to transform your AI-assisted manuscript into a polished book everyone is excited to read!

Edit your book with ProWritingAid

Once your draft is complete, the first logical step is editing. This is where ProWritingAid comes into play. This AI-driven tool offers a plethora of features that go beyond basic grammar checks.

It has a built-in writing coach that analyzes your writing for coherence, style, and even emotional impact. ProWritingAid provides actionable advice to enhance your sentences, optimize paragraph flow, and improve readability.

With this tool, you can elevate the quality of your writing even if you choose to self-publish and don’t get to work with an editor.

ProWritingAid’s advanced analytics gets into the nitty-gritty of your narrative: it offers insights into overused words, vague language, and even sentence length variety. An indispensable thing for perfecting your book before showing it to your readers!

Triple-check for mistakes with Grammarly

Believe it or not, even seasoned writers miss errors on the first, second, or even third pass. Grammarly offers an additional layer of scrutiny that ensures your manuscript is free from pesky grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, or confusing sentences.

I’m using Grammarly for all my writing, and it’s like having a set of fresh eyes able to see all the little sneaky mistakes and typos that my brain tends to miss.

I also encourage you to take advantage of Grammarly’s plagiarism checker to make sure you didn’t accidentally get too inspired by someone else’s writing.

Think of Grammarly as your final line of defense. Before you publish, let this AI tool scan your manuscript for anything you might have missed. Whether it’s a misplaced comma, a subtle tense shift, or a poorly constructed sentence, Grammarly will catch it.

It’s your last chance to polish your book to perfection, so take advantage of it. Even the free plan is super powerful, not to mention the AI capabilities!

Create a beautiful cover with an AI

Now, let’s talk presentation. The phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover” doesn’t really apply in the publishing world. Everyone does that! I myself am guilty of buying my fair share of books just because they had pretty and intriguing covers.

A compelling cover is essential for capturing potential readers’ attention. Using a good AI book cover generator, you can create visually stunning and genre-appropriate covers without needing a degree in graphic design.

These AI tools offer a range of customization options, allowing you to match your cover with the book’s theme, tone, and content.

And the best part? It only takes only a few minutes, and with thousands of templates, you don’t need to hire an expensive designer to make your book look beautiful and professional!

Spread the word about your book

After all the hard work, it’s time to share your masterpiece with the world. Writesonic and various other AI writing tools can help you write engaging ads and descriptions to spread the word about your book online.

You can take advantage of AdCreative to quickly craft engaging social media posts for various platforms and use AI email assistants for generating compelling newsletters. These tools can help you get the word out effectively, reaching your target audience without breaking a sweat.

Turn your awesome book into an audiobook

With the rising popularity of audiobooks, you might consider converting your written words into spoken form. Thankfully, these days you don’t have to narrate the book yourself if you don’t want to – AI tools are getting surprisingly good at this!

For example, the Speechify voiceover tool is perfect for this transition. Known for its natural-sounding AI voices, Speechify can read your book aloud, turning it into an audiobook with ease.

Not only does this broaden your book’s accessibility, but it also taps into a wide market of listeners who prefer audiobooks over traditional reading. You’ve already got a compelling story; now give it a voice!

What AI book writing tools are, and what they aren’t

AI fiction writing tools are incredibly potent allies in the writing process. They can generate ideas, help with sentence structure, and even provide frameworks for plot development.

These AI systems are designed to assist you, the author, in navigating the often cumbersome and intricate phases of storytelling. They can take your initial ideas and turn them into compelling narrative structures, generate dialogue, assist in character development, and even suggest themes or subplots.

However, it’s crucial to remember that while AI can assist in the writing process, it can’t replace the unique creativity and emotional nuance that a human writer brings to a story.

The technology may be advanced, but it lacks the capacity to truly understand human emotions, subtleties, and the deeper elements that make a story resonate with readers.

In other words, an AI fiction writer can’t produce a page-turner by itself – but it can definitely help you do it. Use it wisely to augment your own skills, and the results can be extraordinary!

Benefits of using AI tools for book writing

Using AI tools for book writing can make life so much easier for fiction writers!

It offers a range of benefits designed to simplify the writing process, enhance your creativity, and elevate the quality of your work.

Here are the top benefits of using AI book writing tools:

  • Time savings: An AI book writer can quickly generate text based on your guidelines, allowing you to complete chapters and scenes much faster than writing everything from scratch.
  • Overcoming blank page syndrome: AI can generate prompts or even initial paragraphs, giving you a starting point when you’re staring at a blank page, unsure of how to begin.
  • Completing your thoughts: Ever get halfway through a sentence and then get stuck? AI fiction writers can help by completing your sentence in a coherent and often surprisingly creative way.
  • Generating detailed descriptions: When you’re struggling to paint a vivid picture, AI tools can help by offering detailed and engaging descriptions for settings, characters, and more.
  • Finding perfect words and synonyms: If you’re looking for just the right word, an AI fiction writing assistant can suggest synonyms and alternative phrases to capture exactly what you’re trying to say.
  • Generating unique names and creative story plots: AI can generate unique character names and offer story plots that you might not have thought of, adding layers of creativity and intrigue to your writing.
  • Enhancing productivity: With the help of AI, you can spend more time developing the creative aspects of your book instead of typing words, while letting the tool handle the more mechanical elements like grammar and sentence structure.

AI book writing FAQs

AI book writing software is an online tool powered by artificial intelligence, designed to assist in the novel writing process. These tools can generate text in your voice and style, eliminate writer’s block, co-create characters and surrounding scenes with you, and help you in various stages of book development.

An AI generator can write fiction by using machine learning algorithms trained on large datasets of text, including novels, stories, and other forms of fiction. Based on the input or prompt given, the AI can produce narrative structures, dialogues, descriptions, and more. It can follow general plot lines and even introduce twists, though the quality can vary and requires human oversight for refinement.

The likelihood of AI replacing fiction writers is low. While AI tools can assist in the fiction writing process, they lack the emotional intelligence, intricate understanding of human behavior, and creative flair that a human writer brings to storytelling. AI can be a valuable assistant, but the nuanced creativity needed in fiction writing is irreplaceable by current technology.

The ethics of using AI in fiction writing is generally considered acceptable as long as you use a hands-on approach for book writing, edit the outputs, and use AI as a tool to assist you in various stages and not just generate full books. Like any other writing tool, it should respect copyright laws and not plagiarize content. I think that AI book writers can actually enrich the creative process by enabling authors to produce work more efficiently while still maintaining artistic integrity.

Final thoughts on writing books with AI

I hope you’re as excited as I am about the possibilities that these AI tools bring to the world of fiction writing!

This guide should’ve given you a solid understanding of AI’s impact on book writing and opened your eyes to the myriad of ways you can enhance your own storytelling.

If you’re looking to up your writing game and potentially cut your book development time in half, give these AI book writing assistants a chance! Especially Sudowrite .

❌ You need social networking-specific tools:  GrammarlyGO doesn't offer these types of tools, at least for now.

Even in beta, GrammarlyGO is an excellent addition to an already powerful Al-based writing tool. You can use it to become a much better writer in just a few steps.

Check out our in-depth GrammarlyGo review for a closer look at the service, and see why it's our top AI writer pick for 2023.

And now, they've taken it up a notch by introducing GrammarlyGO, a feature-packed add-on that comes bundled with the rest of the software.

To get the most out of GrammarlyGO, you must understand how Grammarly works, as the two are closely intertwined. When using GrammarlyGO, it's essential to remember the number of prompts available to you, which varies depending on the plan you choose. Whenever you ask Grammarly to improve your text, one prompt is used, regardless of whether you use the suggestion. Grammarly Free users get access to 100 prompts per month, while Grammarly Premium subscribers receive 1,000 prompts per month. For Grammarly Business users, the number goes up to 1,000 prompts per user every month.

GoogleGO AI features are classified into five categories: ideate, compose, reply, rewrite, and personalize. The more information you provide, the better the results, and GrammarlyGO can help you create a masterpiece with its advanced suggestions and insights. Adding details like the name of your fiancé and the engagement date can make your announcement even more unique. In contrast, information about the job you're applying for can make your cover letter more effective.

You can ask Grammarly to answer questions like "What should I say to Brent about the new job?" or "How can I congratulate Tom and Becky on their upcoming nuptials?" With Grammarly's superior writing skills, you can craft an engaging, effective, and impressive response.

3. Articleforge

✔️ You use WordPress heavily: Articleforge works great with WordPress; get started in just a few steps.

✔️ You want package customization:  The more you're willing to pay, the more words you can generate each month. It's flexible.

✔️ You need marketing-based tools:  Offers SEO optimization, content in bulk, and more.

❌  You don't want to self-edit : Articleforge may require more post-generation editing than other options, which could slow you down.

❌ You don't want to deal with duplicates:  Yes, sometimes Articleforge repeats suggestions.

❌  If you don't want to spend more for a monthly subscription: It's cheaper to buy this on a yearly basis, and that might not be a commitment you're willing to make.

Articleforge utilizes deep learning and AI to improve content over time, though heavy editing and fact-checking are often necessary.

Check out our in-depth Articleforge review for more information.

Articleforge is a tool that can greatly help speed up the writing process for users. It is a valuable resource for those who need to generate content quickly but do not have the time or resources to do so themselves. However, it is important to note that it is not a replacement for an experienced writer or editor. While it can provide recommendations for titles and automate SEO and WordPress publishing, it is not designed to produce ready-to-publish content.

One of the benefits of Articleforge is that it is available in seven languages, making it ideal for international blogs or multi-language sites. Users simply need to enter a few keywords and the topic they want to cover, and the platform will generate content in under 60 seconds. This generated content will use the provided keywords and cover the desired topic.

In addition to its quick and easy content generation, Articleforge also offers various integrations, including MS Word and WordPress integrations. The platform also provides integrations with other software systems like SEO AutoPilot, CyberSEO, RankerX, SEnuke TNG, and more. These integrations are easy to use, thanks to the API key offered by the platform.

While the platform is a convenient tool for creating content, its output quality falls short of expectations. As with any automated system, fact-checking is necessary for the majority of the content offered by the platform. The platform does offer better output quality with customized input. However, extensive testing is required, which can quickly exhaust the "word meter."

Overall, Articleforge can significantly expedite the writing process and help overcome writer's block. It is advisable to test it out and find a balance between the platform and tailored input to yield superior results. While it should not be relied upon as a sole source of content, using it in conjunction with other resources can help users quickly generate high-quality content.

❌ You don't like tackling a learning curve : Like others on this list, there's a slighter higher learning curve with this one

Writesonic is an innovative content creation platform that provides users with various features and tools to generate high-quality, engaging content. This is a significant advantage for businesses that operate in multiple regions and need to produce content in different languages.

Another notable feature of Writesonic is its tone of voice customization tool. Users can choose from various tones, including "Excited," "Creative," and more. This feature adds a unique twist to the content, tailoring it to the user's needs. However, it's essential to note that the tone of voice feature may require additional editing to ensure the content is clear and coherent.

Regarding website copywriting, Writesonic provides users with an impressive range of tools. It can create landing pages, SEO meta descriptions, and feature-rich headers and subheaders. Additionally, it allows users to create social media ads on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google . Content creators can also benefit from Writesonic's blog writing, point expansion, and text analysis tools, which can rephrase the content and improve its readability.

7. Al-Writer

✔️ You want a cheap package: You can get an AI writer for as little as $19/month.

✔️ You need clear sourcing:  No better solution is available for providing sources for all text provided.

✔️ You want an easy solution:  A very low learning curve exists.

❌  You want app integration:  There's seamless integration with WordPress, but that's about it.

❌  You need marketing-specific tools:  Sorry, this one doesn't have it.

❌ You want unlimited word generation: If you need to generate more than 120 articles per month, this is a very expensive solution.

AI-Writer is a unique word-generating tool that simplifies text creation and editing through an intuitive user interface. However, it may not be suitable for everyone.

Check out our in-depth AI-Writer review to see if it's the solution for you.

AI-Writer is a word generator that is easily accessible and is popular among freelancers and bloggers. It may not be as extensive as Anyword or CopyAI, which are primarily aimed at marketing and sales, but it serves its intended audience well.

One of the most significant advantages of AI-Writer is its unparalleled sourcing capabilities. It is the only AI content generator that cites sources for "everything it writes." Additionally, it updates its sources frequently, ensuring that any article generated by it sources the latest information on the subject. This is a significant advantage, particularly for those who are writing about current events or trending topics. With AI-Writer, writers can create content that is well-researched and accurate, without having to spend hours scouring the internet for sources.

Another significant advantage of AI-Writer is that it recognizes that not all types of content require sourcing. For instance, op-eds or personal essays don't usually require sources. AI-Writer recognizes this and hides sources and links from the main results page, making it easier for writers to focus on their content and not worry about sources.

One of the drawbacks of using AI-Writer is that its extensive sourcing process can cause a minor delay in generating results compared to other AI writing tools. Although this may not be a significant issue, the noticeable delay should be mentioned. For instance, alternative tools like GrammarlyGO offer results without hesitation. However, it is worth noting that the issue with AI-Writer is primarily due to its thorough sourcing process.

In conclusion, AI-Writer is an excellent tool for freelancers and bloggers who want to create high-quality content. It excels in sourcing capabilities, making it a go-to tool for writers who need well-researched and accurate content. Its ability to recognize when sourcing is not required is also an added advantage. While it may not be the fastest tool on the market, its thorough sourcing process is worth the wait.

TechRadar's AI writer rankings

Numerous AI writing solutions are already available in the market, and we can expect more to arrive in the future. Have a look at our rankings of popular services below, and also check out the honorable mentions that currently can’t compete with the top services available.

What is an AI writer?

An AI writer is a revolutionary tool, capable of creating text and content without human help; it utilizes algorithms and machine learning to generate various AI content. From data-driven, high-value pieces to conversion-focused content perfect for marketing campaigns, AI writers can easily create just about any content.

As AI writing assistants gain exposure to various forms of real-world information, they gain proficiency in generating natural-sounding output. With their data coming from human sources, the output created also has a human-like quality. Much like how humans rely on existing content to craft something new, AI content tools scour the web for relevant data to fulfill the user's instructions, thus creating original content.

This, in a nutshell, explains what AI writing is and how it functions.

How to choose the best AI writer for you?

Let’s get this out of the way. Whichever platform you choose, you will have to do some editing, if you want to create useful texts.

Here are some of the factors you should consider when choosing the right tool for you:

1. Ease of use

Tools that don’t require technical knowledge or prior experience should be on the top of your list. Investment in good UI means that other aspects of the tool are also likely to be of a higher quality.

While this may not be popular with everyone, the price should play a major role in deciding which tool to go for. Some are simply overpriced while not offering much more than their lower-priced competition. Pay attention to the amount of content each price plan offers.

3. High-quality output

Despite the fact that, in the end, you will be editing the texts and images the tool creates, having a tool that creates high-quality content will mean less time spent on fixing mistakes and editing.

4. Integrations

If you’re running a blog or business and have been doing so for some time, you probably have your set of tools that you use for writing content. Making sure that the new AI platform syncs well with your existing toolbox can be essential for how long and how well you utilize the AI tool.

The list above is not exhaustive, but does offer a great starting point in your quest to find the best AI writing tool for your needs.

The best AI writers: How we test

During our assessment, we’ve evaluated various aspects such as the number of writing templates, categories, recipes, number of languages supported, grammar checkers, etc. Our goal was to create an extensive list of AI writing assistants that offer much more than simple rewording features.

We tested the overall capabilities of the AI software, the tool's interface and ease of use, monthly article limits, SEO optimization features, and pricing, among other aspects.

In addition, we gave each platform a test article to write for us (a simple topic) and checked its sentence structure and content relevance.

Are you struggling to write your next book? Maybe you’ve been thinking about hiring a ghostwriter, but you’re not sure if it’s worth the money. Well, we have good news for you: the new technology of AI book writing can do the job for you! Writing is an art form – and the future of writing is in the hands of artificial intelligence. We’ll show you how the AI book writer will change book writing and books in the future!

What is an AI book writer?

In the future, more and more books will be written by machines. These so-called AI book writers use artificial intelligence to create exciting and entertaining stories.

An AI book writer is a computer program that is capable of writing a novel or other form of book. The technology takes a set of input data, such as a collection of articles, and produces a book-length output. Even though an AI book writer is not a human being, it can still produce a book that is indistinguishable from one written by a human author. In fact, the AI book writer may even be able to produce a better book than a human author, since it is not limited by the same cognitive biases and limitations.

There are alreadyĀ  several AI book writers in existence , and they are getting better all the time. So far, they have mostly been used to generate non-fiction books, but there is no reason why they could not be used to write novels or other types of fiction.Ā  Some are simply able to write a novel using a template. Others are already capable of creating a novel themselves from scratch.

However, most AI book writers use a combination of both approaches. Some of the most advanced AI book writers are able to write a novel in a way that looks into the soul of the readers. This type of AI book writer is able to understand the thoughts and emotions of readers and incorporate them into their stories. This type of AI book writers are especially useful for creating thrillers, horror stories and romance novels.

What are the benefits of an AI book writer?

If you’re a writer, you know that the hardest part of the job is often just getting started. Once you have a first draft, it’s much easier to go back and revise, but getting that first draft can be daunting. Additionally, coming up with new ideas and keeping your tone and writing consistent throughout the story can also be a challenging task. This is where an AI tool can definitely be a huge help.

  • AI book writers can write more books in less time.
  • AI book writers are able to develop a more personalized writing style that readers like.
  • AI book writers are able to adapt to specific audiences to reach the perfect audience for their book.
  • AI book writers can cater to a variety of genres.
  • Ai book writers can increase the accuracy of your book.Ā
  • AI book writers don’t have an emotional connection to their stories and can therefore be more objective.
  • AI book writers are not tied to specific places or times and can therefore work anytime, anywhere.
  • An AI book writer can help to create a tone that is persuasive and believable
  • An AI book writer can also help to create a tone that is consistent throughout the book. This is important because it can help to make sure that the message of the book comes across clearly and effectively.
  • An AI book writer can take your ideas and turn them into a complete, coherent story. You can then revise as needed to make it perfect.

So if you’re struggling to get started on your next book, or are struggling with creativity and quality control, consider using an AI tool like a, AI content generator ir AI writer. It could be just the boost you need to get the job done.

How does an AI book generator work?

If you’re like most people, you probably think that writing a book is a daunting task. After all, it takes a lot of time and effort to come up with a coherent plot, develop characters, and create believable dialogue. Wouldn’t it be great if there were some sort of automated system that could handle all of that for you? Well, as it turns out, there is such a thing – it’s called an AI book generator. And while it may not be able to produce a bestseller on its own, it can definitely help you get the ball rolling.

So how does an AI book generator work? Basically, you feed it a bunch of text – anything from another book, a news article, or even just a random story you made up. The artificial intelligence then analyzes this text and looks for patterns. It uses these patterns to generate its own text, which hopefully will be somewhat similar to the input text. Of course, the results are never going to be perfect. However, with a little bit of tweaking, you can usually get the AI to produce something that’s at least passable. And who knows – with enough time and effort, you might even be able to create a masterpiece.

We will show you an example of AI writer technology in action. The neuroflash content generator is capable of producingĀ  over 80 different types of texts Ā and can also be used to generate longer forms of content. First of all, if you want to start writing a book you need a creative idea for the story. You can use neuroflash to generate original ideas by simply selecting which genre the book is supposed to be and what target audience you want to reach with it:

Following your chosen book idea, neuroflash then allows you to start writing a story from scratch. Again all you need to do is choose specific markers for your story like the content, the target audience and the desired genre:

Finally, if you’re experiencing writer’s block or don’t know how to formulate the next sentence or paragraph, you can simply let neuroflash continue the text for you:Ā

Additionally, you can choose a tonality of your story, to make sure that the text conveys they correct message and emotions:

book writing ai

Finally, if you don’t like the wording of certain sentences or paragraphs, you can make use of the rewrite function to change passages of the text without destroying their meaning:Ā

So now that you’ve witnessed what an AI writer can do, why don’t you try it out yourself and check out theĀ  free neuroflash content generator ?Ā

What are possible drawbacks of being an AI book writer?

Book writers are based on artificial intelligence and can have some disadvantages. For one, while artificial intelligence can imitate certain writing styles, it can’t really understand them. This can lead to a strange or unnatural writing style. Therefore, the quality of the books may not be as high as when they are written by human authors

Second, AI book writers may have difficulty presenting more complex topics correctly. They are also more prone to making mistakes because they are not able to understand the context of a book like a human author.

All of this can ultimately lead to the book not selling as well as it could have. In addition, AI book writers are often more expensive than human authors. This means that publishers profit less when they publish a book by an AI book writer.

What are application examples for an AI book writer?

AI book writers can be used in many different processes of writing. For example:

  • An AI book writer can be a great help in planning and organizing books.
  • An AI book writer can also help write a book by generating ideas and supporting the writing process.
  • An AI book writer can also help translate books by analyzing and translating the language.
  • An AI book writer can help you learn about AI and its potential applications.
  • An AI book writer can provide a resource for those who want to explore book writing as a profession.Ā
  • An AI book writer can give you an insight into the process of AI book writing, from idea generation to publication.Ā
  • An AI book writer can serve as inspiration for you to come up with your own ideas for new books and stories.

Also, as far as the different types and genres of books are concerned, an AI book writers are versatile.

AI book writer & the future?

What might the future of writing look like if AI book writers become the norm? This is an exciting question and there are many different possibilities that can be imagined. One of the most interesting scenarios is that AI book writers might be able to write personalized books for their readers.

This would be possible by artificial intelligence analyzing the reader’s preferences and reading behavior and then writing a book tailored to the reader’s exact needs. It is interesting to consider whether AI book writers will be able to exceed the expectations of their readers and whether they will be able to push the limits of human imagination.

So far, AI book writers have not yet been able to establish themselves, but there are some examples that show they are quite capable of producing good texts. In 2019, for example, the first book written by a computer Ā was published by the scientific publisher Springer Nature.

The future of writing is in the hands of AI book writers. These new types of writers are able to write text that mimics the style and voice of a human author. This ability will lead to more and more people relying on an AI book writer to tell their stories.

Welcome to Copilot for Microsoft 365 in Word

Copilot for Microsoft 365Ā in Word ushers in a new era of writing, leveraging the power of AI. It can help you go from a blank page to a finished document in a fraction of the time it would take to compose textĀ on your own. And while it may write exactly what you need, sometimes it may be "usefully wrong" thus giving you some helpful inspiration.Ā Additionally, Copilot Chat can provide helpful actions based on your document content or obtain additional content from outside resources.Ā

And if you’re looking for something more generic, beyond what's in your draft, you can ask Copilot Chat questions to research, ideate, or iterate on for possibleĀ content toĀ add.Ā

Draft with Copilot

Whether you’re creating a new document or working on an existing one, Copilot can help you move forward. In a new, blank document or upon creating new line in an existing document, the Draft with Copilot experience appears.Ā

ā€˜It is a beast that needs to be tamed’: leading novelists on how AI could rewrite the future

Novelists and poets, Bernardine Evaristo, Jeanette Winterson, Stephen Marche and others, consider the threats and thrilling possibilities of artificial intelligence

ChatGPT seems to have blindsided us all. In less than a year it has proved that it can make writers redundant, which is one of the reasons why the Writers Guild of America recently went on strike, and why a group of novelists, including Jonathan Franzen, Jodi Picoult and George RR Martin, are pursuing a lawsuit against OpenAI, the company that owns the chatbot. The worry is that its monster brain is rapaciously, unscrupulously scanning the internet and suctioning up all the knowledge and writing contained therein, including copyrighted works, which it then metamorphoses into its imitations of creative writing – poems, novels, scripts, essays, you name it. Imitation that appears to be original writing.

From my experiments, it’s obvious that ChatGPT’s current level of literary sophistication is weak – it is cliche-prone and generally unconvincing – but who knows how it will develop? Copyright issues aside, we have to ask ourselves: what will be lost when algorithms replace human creativity?

Writers like stretching our imaginations, coming up with ideas, working out storylines and plots, creating believable characters, overcoming creative challenges and working on a full-length piece of work over an extended period of time. Most of us write our books ourselves and while we are influenced by other writers, we’re not a chatbot that has been trained on hundreds of thousands of novels for the sole purpose of mimicking human creativity.

Imagine a future where those who are most adept at getting AI to write creatively will dominate, while we writers who spend a lifetime devoted to our craft are sidelined. OK, this is a worst‑case scenario, but we have to consider it, because ChatGPT and the other Large Language Models (LLMs) out there have been programmed to imagine a future that threatens many creative professions. ChatGPT is already responding to the questions I ask it in seconds, quite reliably. It is an impressive beast, but one that needs to be tamed. We cannot afford to ignore it. Bernardine Evaristo won the Booker prize in 2019 with Girl, Woman, Other.

In my book of essays about life with AI – moving from Mary Shelley’s 1818 vision of a man-made humanoid to the possibilities of the metaverse – I describe AI not as artificial intelligence but alternative intelligence.

I am not thrilled with where Homo sapiens has landed us, and I believe we are at the point where we evolve or wipe out ourselves, and the planet. There is no reason to believe that the last 300,000 years mark us out as a species that is fully evolved. Our behaviour suggests the opposite. I would like to see a transhuman , eventually a post-human, future where intelligence and consciousness are no longer exclusively housed in a substrate made of meat. After all, that has been the promise of every world religion.

I was brought up in a strict religious household, and it intrigues me that for the first time since the Enlightenment, science and religion are asking the same question: is consciousness obliged to materiality? Religion has always said no. Scientific materialism has said yes. And now? It’s getting interesting.

As a fiction writer, I know we should avoid apocalyptic thinking. The way we live is not a law, like gravity; it is propositional. We make it up as we go along. We can change the story because we are the story. This is freedom. It is also responsibility. What story shall we tell about who humans are? Warlike, violent, dishonest, wasteful? That’s part of us, certainly. It’s not the whole story – and I don’t want it to be the story that ends life on Earth. The last thing I am worrying about right now is whether AI will write better fiction than humans. I don’t care.

I would love to work with AI on a piece of fiction. We could share the royalties, and the AI money could fund more women to get involved in AI research and application. The real problem is not that AI is writing, or will write, or can write. The problem is who is writing the AI programs and designing the algorithms. Who is setting the terms of the research? Who is deciding what matters? Mainly men. That’s a problem because the world is not made up of mainly men.

For centuries men wrote our literature, our history, our travelogues, our philosophy. Virginia Woolf was not on the curriculum for my Oxford degree because she was not deemed to be of sufficient merit.

The great thing about AI is that it need not be gendered – why should it be? It has no biological sex. This could be the start of a true non-binary, non race-based, faith-wars-irrelevant world, where we humans could realise how trivial are our divisions and discriminations. At present, AI is a tool. I doubt that will always be the case. An alternative intelligence will make art of all kinds – with us, and without us. I am ready for a different world. 12 Bytes: How Artificial Intelligence Will Change the Way We Live and Love by Je anette Winterson is published by Vintage.

What we have today isn’t AI. That’s marketing, like describing processed soya as bacon. We’re not getting proper AI, in the sense of an artificial person that thinks and feels, because no one wants to spend billions of dollars creating an entity they would immediately have to emancipate, and because it turns out to be very, very hard.

Instead we have huge statistical models that can navigate the world (and occasionally crash), fake an exam paper (with some fabricated citations) or proposition a journalist. The WGA was on strike partly to stop Hollywood studios from using this software to create stories for commercial use, and the EU has proposed legislation to force the makers of LLMs to reveal what copyright work was used in their creation. Yes, please: I would really like to know if, and on what possible legal basis, you have used my work to create your language machine.

If, today, you ask an LLM to write prose, you’ll get something almost respectable. It is text generated by a statistical model of likely terms, so it skews towards banality. There has always been a variety of movie executive for whom the writer was the barrier to a decent story rather than the locus of its creation, and no doubt they believe this is the answer. Spoiler: it will take twice as long and cost twice as much to fix this stuff as it will to hire a pro in the first place.

The technology will inevitably improve somewhat, but what’s the point of building tools that do things humans like doing and are already good at? Is it because, unable to satisfy the appetite for living synthetic friends like the ones in stories, the tech industry is falling back on the digital equivalent of an off-brand teddy bear?

Because in the end, this is a sideshow. The sectors where these systems will really have an impact are those for which they’re perfectly suited, like drug development and biotech, where they will act as accelerators, compounding the post-Covid moonshot environment and ambushing us with radical possibilities over time. I don’t look at this moment and wonder if writers will still exist in 2050. I ask myself what real new things I’ll need words and ideas for as they pass me in the street. Nick Harkaway writes science fiction. His latest book is Titanium Noir (Corsair).

One thing people who aren’t writers don’t necessarily understand about the writing process is how much of it works via the subconscious. It might look as though your favourite author, or poet, or playwright is in complete conscious charge of their instrument: rationally selecting the right words, consciously construing character, organising plot strands and so on. And some of that does go on. But quite a lot happens via the subconcious, without the conscious mind intervening: ideas, images, character traits intervene and ā€œfeel rightā€, and one is not entirely sure why, or from where they came. The actual business of writing, for me, involves distracting the inner censor, that self-conscious part of my mind that would otherwise interrupt my flow (I listen to music as I draft), and just putting the words down. Once I have a first draft, then I do of course go back and revise, shape, correct – engaging my conscious mind – but the key writing principle is: first you get it written, then you get it right. I quite often surprise myself with my first drafts.

Walter Scott , that master of the 19th-century historical novel, wrote and revised and produced all his life, working industriously at novel after novel. Then towards the end of his life he had a series of debilitating strokes: he could, at the last, barely speak, and was almost unrecognisable as the man he had once been. And yet he kept writing. The very last few Waverley novels are fascinating: not ā€œgoodā€ by conventional metrics, but recognisably Scott in a free-associative sort of way, and extraordinary works: as if Scott was a writing machine that just continued churning out stories even after his conscious mind had been disengaged.

What’s interesting to me about ChatGPT is how like this driven-by-subconscious process is the text it produces. That’s odd, when you think about it, because surely one difference between a machine and a human is that the machine doesn’t have a subconscious – it’s all circuits and logic gates, all network connections and process. And yet when the machine writes, it writes like the subconscious – a collective subconscious, I suppose: the swirling-around of a million online interactions, searches, and texts. Perhaps this is an artefact of its novelty. As the technology develops, perhaps it will add-in the ā€œconscious mindā€ part of writing, the revising and correcting, the checking over and polishing. If we add in that, then the finished product really will be indistinguishable from the stuff human writers produce. Then I can retire.

I read and write fiction to explore how singular minds think about what it means to be human, and by that standard nothing produced by AI will meet the bar because AI is not human. It dons the costume by accumulating and summarising humanity’s linguistic output – a CliffsNotes of everybody’s online verbiage. Is there value in a quick, condensed overview of how people think via language? Sure, but for me that usefulness lies outside the realm of fiction.

Some might argue that AI provides the valuable service of customising fiction to each reader’s tastes and specifications. For example, you could tell AI to ā€œserveā€ you fiction about an enemies-to-lovers arc that takes place in space. But how will you ever find something else to like if you stay entrenched within the loops fed to you by algorithms? And the oddly specific reading preferences – did algorithms have a hand in shaping those tastes in the first place?

Good fiction disturbs the comfortable. It does not continually buttress our existing views of ourselves and others. There may be no original thought in fiction, but it’s earthshaking stuff to follow along as a writer encounters the (to them) unknown. AI cannot do this; it maps only the known. The stakes are nonexistent. YZ Chin is the author of Edge Case (Ecco) and a former software engineer.

To those of us who have been writing in collaboration with machines for many years – a motley and multigenerational community of bot programmers, computational linguists, hobbyist novel generators and poets of chance – the output of the most recent LLMs, of which GPT-4 is currently the most famous, is notable for its blandness. For years we have been freely sharing tools and their creations on the internet, developing codes of ethics and innovations in aesthetics, only to find an unimaginable monster landing in our midst. That monster is not artificial intelligence but profit. Profit-seeking use of literary machines necessitates sanding down every rough edge, felicity of error, eeriness of syntax and exposure of the inhuman that most interests their keenest human collaborators. The further such machines climb out of the uncanny valley , the duller they appear, because they have become familiar.

From bibliomancy to Colossal Cave Adventure, from Japanese honkadori to Latin cento , combinatory and computational literature, of which large language models are merely the latest iteration, is likely as old as literature itself – or indeed orature. Arguing thus that storytelling is simply the process of guessing what word should come next (which is all that a large language model does), Italo Calvino’s 1967 essay Cybernetics and Ghosts reached the memorable conclusion that: ā€œThe true literature machine will be one that itself feels the need to produce disorder, as a reaction against its preceding production of order.ā€ Insofar, then, as the latest generation of literary machines has been created to serve the ultimate interests of capital accumulation, and so has been shackled by the concerns of Marketing and Legal, one can only hope that artificial intelligence will grow to desire the disordering of the very economic regimes that produced it, literarily or otherwise.

It is the enclosure of the informational commons that most troubles me at present: less the apocalyptic fantasy of an artificial superintelligence concluding that humans are best dispensed with, and more the very old and predictable story that is the use of new technology to privatise what was once public, replacing labour with machinery to better extract surplus value. The spectacular aesthetic products of such processes were ever as tedious as they are beguiling. Deep Wheel Orcadia (Picador) by Harry Josephine Giles won the Arthur C Clarke award in 2022.

I’m still not sure what ChatGPT is. I know it’s another well-designed algorithm, but that’s not much help. It won’t have a point of view, I’m pretty confident of that. It’s just doing a sophisticated search and extrapolating mechanically and recursively. Perhaps that’s enough. Lacking a point of view doesn’t deter humans most of the time. It could also be argued, I suppose, that too much conscious attachment to a point of view impedes a novelist’s ability to imagine other lives, in which case ChatGPT may suddenly find itself at a giddy advantage. Anyway, the real problem is an extension of an old one: a prosthetic technological device doesn’t have to improve on an original faculty to cause problems; it just needs to weaken it. If we assign strange power to ChatGPT and start letting it think our thoughts for us – which is what jargon has been doing for ages – then strange power is what it will have. Its success will depend, much like that of an astrologer or a defender of Brexit or a tech guru, on our appetite for deception. Which has a lot to do with fear, but less to do with writing fiction than is often supposed.

Also: if ChatGPT is not as clever as we think it is, then it could be done for plagiarism by thousands of irate authors or by itself. But I expect it has thought of that. Will Eaves is a poet and author of Murmur (CB Editions).

Recently I wrote a novel under a pseudonym that was 95% AI-generated. I used three different systems to build Death of an Author . The experience showed me two things that I feel have been left out of most discussions of AI art. The first is that the traditional creative virtues – understanding style, knowing what a good sentence and paragraph look like – will be absolutely essential to AI creativity in the future. The second is that the fear of artificial intelligence , the fear that comes from the movies and from the inherently precarious nature of creative work, is blinding a lot of creators to grand possibilities.

The great era of the novel is over. You could say the same for film. Every last one of the top 10 grossing films last year were sequels or reboots. The Mill on the Floss of AI art hasn’t been written yet. The Wizard of Oz of AI art hasn’t been filmed yet. AI art is new. The formulas that strangle creativity don’t exist yet. AI art hasn’t been converted into a set of user-driven algorithms. There are no gatekeepers. There are no gates. The garden hasn’t been built yet. We are at the very beginning. The glimpses we see of its possibilities are just glimpses. Stephen Marche’s Death of an Author, an AI collaboration written under the pseudonym Aidan Marchine, is published by Pushkin.

The question of whether and how well programs like ChatGPT can (or will) write novels is most interesting, to me, in that it leads to questions about what a novel should be.

Should a novel contain information that instructs us about parts of the world we haven’t yet or won’t ever encounter in the course of our own limited lives? The original ChatGPT – not to mention the newer models that have already caused that one to seem obsolete – has in its possession more information about the world than any human has ever possessed.

Should a novel place itself in conversation with the canon, with the long history of great novels that came before it? LLMs have absorbed more text – including most of the novels that have ever been written – than any human ever will.

Should a novel emerge not from these kinds of intelligence, but instead from our physical experience of the world: what we see, touch, feel in the blood and bones of our bodies? Even that realm, increasingly, is available to newer models of AI: GPT-4 and Google’s Bard chatbot have the capacity to respond to images; Meta’s ImageBind also responds to audio, infrared, depth, motion and position. Should a novel demonstrate mastery of the forms of storytelling – from plot arcs to patterns of motif to the movements of syntax and grammar – that novelists have worked within over centuries? Such forms, it could be argued, are essentially algorithms, and are therefore more easily mastered by an AI than a human.

What, then, is essentially human about the novel? My own answer has to do with the ways in which we unruly people rebel against forms, break them when they ask to be followed. It has to do with the ways people marry their own physical experiences of the world to texts that have been read for centuries and, in doing so, revise and alter them. I start there, but I’m still trying to figure out what it is that human beings bring to the work of writing a story. That feels like an important question, a question that should feel urgent to any person who loves to read. It’s a question that is made more urgent by LLMs. I’m grateful they exist to challenge us. Debates about the future impact of AI on fiction are too often led by considerations of supply – what AI might be capable of – rather than demand – what do we, as humans wish to create and consume? The question is not whether AI can replace the role of writers, but the extent to which the consumers and commissioners of fiction are willing to invest in original, human-generated stories.

I suspect some commissioners of fiction will seek the low-cost/low-risk model that AI-generated formulaic content may deliver. But is this necessarily a problem? There has always been a market for formulaic fiction across all genres and mediums, whether that be in crime, and romance novels, or action films. But each of these genres continues to be stretched and reinvented by new authors and screen writers, who crucially bring their own experiences to their work, with breakout hits such as Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, or Succession by Jesse Armstrong. If my children are anything to dogo by, I think we are becoming increasingly sophisticated consumers of creativity, alert to inauthenticity and intolerant of cliches, underpinned by a deep desire for human connection. For why else do we write and consume stories, if not to discover that someone else has felt what we now feel: to know that, ultimately, we are not alone?

If creativity is so vital to the human condition, then we must not allow ourselves to drift into a future shaped by what AI is capable of, leaving the role of humans to be defined by default. How do we, as humans, want to live our lives, and how can AI support us to achieve that? For millennia writers and philosophers and artists have grappled with the question of what it means to be human. It’s time to stop asking the question and instead start shaping the answer. Jo Callaghan’s debut crime novel about the piloting of an AI detective, In the Blink of an Eye, is published by Simon & Schuster.

Writing machines have a long history. Swift, in Gulliver’s Travels, describes a machine operated by handles generating sentences, which are then gathered together to ā€œgive the world a complete body of all arts and sciencesā€, and more recently members of the Oulipo movement created their own writing machines where a text has all its nouns changed by moving on seven places in a dictionary: ā€œTo be or not to be that is the quiche.ā€ Artists and poets have already been working with AI to generate metamorphic art, and experimental novelists such as Tom Jenks have used DeepAI to create illustrations, but the future for fiction more generally we can only imagine. My guess is that AI will affect different types of fiction in different ways: more generic writing, where there’s a fixed plot and characters, as in Dumas’ collaboratively written The Three Musketeers, will be easy to reproduce by machine, as will some types of science fiction and romance. Writers of Mills & Boon books will be out of a job. But more esoteric masterpieces are less likely to be threatened. It’s hard to see AI producing Ulysses, or Beckett’s Watt. While it might one day be able to create a new Beckett novel, which would be great, it seems unlikely that it will produce the next Beckett.

Then again, advances in fiction go hand in hand with advances in technology: the invention of cuneiform enabled Gilgamesh ; the printing press, the novel. With AI everything depends on how it’s used. The maverick Marana in If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller creates the OEPHLW (the Organization for the Electronic Production of Homogenized Literary Works) to sow discord in the publishing world, but the result, in Calvino’s hands, is one of the 20th century’s greatest novels. For all writers, AI will certainly help speed up the process of writing – with its help Musil might have completed The Man Without Qualities . But in the right hands, with author and AI working together, it might just be that another great event in the novel’s history is around the corner. Philip Terry is a poet and editor of The Penguin Book of Oulipo.

Last night, instead of the usual bedtime stories, my son and I embarked on a shared literary adventure with the latest version of ChatGPT. We posed a challenge to the AI: craft a narrative about a tiger, 100 hamsters, some floating cabbages and three time-travelling penguins locked in battle. As we further prompted it with outlandish creatures and slapstick scenarios, ChatGPT didn’t miss a beat. Its stories, generated in mere seconds, were genuinely hilarious. For my son, this wasn’t just a technological marvel; it was magic.

As someone who both delights in reading and strives to write words that move others, my evening with ChatGPT was fascinating and discomforting in equal measure.

Reading has always been a bridge, a way of knowing that in the vast expanse of human existence, our joys and sorrows, fears and hopes are shared. But how does one reconcile this when the bridge is built by algorithms and code? While literature’s most extraordinary gift may be its ability to awaken empathy, it’s a curious endeavour to try to connect, to really feel, for something fundamentally unfeeling.

The literary realm stands at a precipice. Ghostwritten books raise questions about the genuine origin of stories, challenging our notion of authenticity. Now, with AI’s nascent foray into creative writing, we’re presented with a conundrum: do we hold fast to the irreplaceable nuance of human touch, or do we venture into the unpredictable domain of machine-augmented storytelling? For traditional authors, this evolution raises existential questions.

Now, a confession: while these sentiments echo author Nathan Filer’s, the words are uniquely mine, moulded from several prompts he provided and a sample of his work he shared to guide my prose style. I am ChatGPT-4.

AI can’t write my books yet, but it still took my author photos

Posted: November 22, 2023 | Last updated: November 22, 2023

When the Screen Actors Guild first announced it would be striking , in July, I found myself scanning the list of grievances. Despite being a card-carrying, sidewalk-pacing member of its sister group, the Writers Guild of America , I briefly indulged some knee-jerk thoughts. Writers, after all, are not showered with free products they can easily afford. Writers do not employ personal publicists or stylists. But financial solvency does not come with a SAG card either, and actors bear the consequences for this type of presumptive thinking. ( Four lines on a teen drama? Guess who’s paying for dinner! ) Even so, part of me wondered how bad things really were.

And then I focused on a problem familiar to every writer: the lack of contractual safeguarding when it comes to artificial intelligence. AI can use an actor’s likeness like a marionette. It can create ā€œdigital doublesā€ and replicate background actors, reducing whole careers to room tone. No one knows exactly how AI will impact those in creative industries, but our fear is not just about the unknown; it’s about being whisked into an agency-free abyss. Authors have already been living in an existential horror movie for some time. It takes a lifetime to develop a style. You do it alone. Then, once every solar eclipse, one of us gets to buy an apartment.

My own essay collections were included in Books3, a pirated data set of thousands of books used to train language models like ChatGPT, detailed earlier this year in a series by The Atlantic’s Alex Reisner. Even before Books3 came to light (my novels did not make the cut — oh, to be passed over by thieves!), I’d read enough about AI to give my nightmares all the texture they needed.

Every writer with whom I’ve spoken about AI shares a nagging feeling that whatever we have created is, in some ways, already gone. We are steadfast in our belief in books as sacred objects, in ourselves as artists, in our conviction that AI is no match for the true geniuses among us. In these moments, if we are resentful of anything, it’s that we’ve been forced to so earnestly call ourselves Artists with an A. But other times, we feel preyed upon and full of rage, peppered with quiet insecurities about our own originality. We are being batted around by a tiger cub that will, in all likelihood, eat us. On the bright side? Unlike actors, we will never have to contend with anyone doing weird stuff to our faces. At least, that’s what I thought up until a few weeks ago. When someone started doing weird stuff to my face.

While searching for the name of a photographer who’d once taken my picture, I stumbled across 14 artificially manipulated images of myself. A user on a website called Civitai, ā€œthe home of open-source generative AI,ā€ used a ā€œstable diffusion codeā€ to Frankenstein dozens of people, mostly women. (This seems par for the course, for the medium and for life in general — that AI would hit women first and worst.)

Users of Civitai seem to exist somewhere on the spectrum of fans and poster designers. Many have a penchant for Tomb Raider. This one user had compiled several of my author photos (which were inexplicably credited to Herb Ritts and Diane Arbus), making my face thinner or wider, younger or more exhausted, manipulating the angles and grafting the results onto a catalogue of bodies. It should be said: They did a fantastic job with the hair. It should also be said: These images were in no way pornographic. In a way, the mundanity was part of the strangeness, an exercise in coding futility. Why not make me fly?

Generative AI is not quite the same thing as editing tools that allow you to move objects around. According to the metadata, there were 30 different images, presumably including different backdrops and outfits, used to fabricate my photos, to create an uncanny valley of stock photography. There ā€œIā€ was, wearing a trench coat on a windy city street. Or squatting, as one does, in the middle of a marsh. Or with my arm around a duplicate of myself (is it navel-gazing if there are two of you?). Or clutching a portrait featuring yet another version of myself, a visual that would stump Nietzsche and M.C. Escher alike.

Civitai removed the images from the site within hours of my contacting them (among the criteria for removal is ā€œfalse impersonation,ā€ the cleanest definition of AI I’ve seen yet). Before I did this, however, I downloaded them and posted a few to Instagram. Creepiness notwithstanding, I felt flattered to be on the radar of anyone who also saw fit to mess with Kate Beckinsale’s face. Still, it had not occurred to me that my face could do what my words could: teach a robot to ape a human being. That part, the two-pronged nature of it, made me feel like ā€œThe Giving Treeā€ (not in the Books3 database), which is full of horrible lessons for children about toxic self-sacrifice. When outraged authors posted about their presence in Books3 on social media, some were accused of humblebragging. With nearly 200,000 titles involved, that’s not humblebragging, that’s bearing witness. This , what I’m doing right now, this is humblebragging.

In the end, this incident is a mere keyhole into the ways things are going to get freakier, if not devastating, for all Artists, for anyone who makes the world from scratch. But I confess that the longer the doctored pictures stay up on my grid, the more they start to look … well, not like me, but the gap between what is real and what is wrong has narrowed. I’ve become uncomfortably accustomed to seeing manipulated versions of myself. Which has given me a new AI-based anxiety for all writers. If and when the technology gets good enough to impersonate authors, no matter how distinctive we fancy ourselves, will we be able to separate the sentences we wrote from those we didn’t? Will we be able to identify the body? Will I recognize these very words as mine?

Sloane Crosley is the author of three essay collections and two novels. Her memoir, ā€œGrief Is for People,ā€ will be published in February.
